How Discounts Apply to Memberships and Joining Fees

How discount codes calculate against membership fees, subscriptions, and joining fees, with a worked example of the fee breakdown.

Discount codes don't apply evenly across everything in a checkout. Here's exactly where they land.

What a discount can and can't touch

  • A discount applies to the membership fee only.

  • It is never applied to a joining fee.

  • It is never applied to the transaction fee.

This means if a membership has a joining fee, that amount is always charged in full, discount or no discount.

How it works for upfront payments

The discount is taken straight off the one-off membership fee before the transaction fee is calculated.

How it works for subscriptions

Since the discount is applied to the underlying principal, it reduces every single instalment by the same amount. For example, a £10/month membership with a 10% discount becomes £9/month for every payment, not just the first one.

Worked example

A 10% discount on a £10 membership fee:

  1. Start: £10.00

  2. After 10% discount: £9.00

  3. After the 4.4% processing fee: £9.00 − 4.4% = £8.60

  4. Add the 50p checkout fee: £8.60 + £0.50 = £9.10

This is shown in the app with the discount line sitting directly below the original membership fee, so the calculation is visible at every step.

FAQ

If my membership has a joining fee, does my discount code reduce it too?

No. Only the recurring or upfront membership fee is discounted. The joining fee is always charged at full price.

Does the transaction fee ever get discounted?

No, the 50p transaction fee is fixed and applied after any discount, on every successful charge.
