When analyzing your marketing data in Polar, you may wish to break down any number of reports by marketing channel, in order to compare performance insights for each channel. You can easily add a channel breakdown to your reports in Polar to see basic channel performance insights.
However, if you use custom channel groupings based on channel or campaign names to further segment your marketing channels, you can re-create those custom groupings using a Custom Dimension. You can use this strategy to drill deeper into your data by Organic Channels, Paid Search Brand, Paid Search Non-Brand, Influencer, and more.
How-To: Group Marketing Channels with a Custom Dimension
Step 1. Launch the Custom Dimension builder.
The first step is to launch the Custom Dimension builder to create a dimension that will group your channels based on the logic that you dictate. You'll be able to use the dimension to both breakdown and filter your data.
You can launch the Custom Dimension builder here.
Step 2. Create "When" blocks to group channels.
Within the Custom Dimension builder, use the "When" blocks to create rules (by channel, campaign, or any other rules you'd like to include) that will group your channels together. The actual setup of each of your "When" blocks will depend on the grouping that you'd like to configure - see below for a few examples of how you could set this up.
Important: When you are grouping by channel or campaign, ensure that you've selected the "Shared Channel" or "Share Campaign" dimension within your "When" statement, so that the channels are mapped across sources. These dimensions have the purple polar bear nose next to them - see below for a visual.
Example A: If you'd like to group together your Social Paid channels, you could add a "When" block similar to the following:
When Channel is Facebook Ads OR Channel is TikTok Ads (adding additional "or" rules for any of your other paid social channels)
Then 'Social Paid'
Example B: If you'd like to group together your E-mail or Outbound channels, you could add a "When" block similar to the following:
When Channel is Attentive OR Channel is Klaviyo (adding additional "or" rules for any of your other email or outbound channels)
Then 'Email / Outbound'
Example C: If you'd like to group together your Organic Search channels, you could add a "When" block similar to the following:
When Channel is Google OR Channel is Duckduckgo (adding additional "or" rules for any of your other organic search channels), AND Campaign is undefined OR Campaign is (not set) OR Campaign is (organic)
Then 'Organic Search'
Repeat the above process using additional "When" blocks for each channel grouping that you'd like to create.
Step 3. Name and save your dimension.
Once you've configured the correct rules within your Custom Dimension, ensure that you've given your Custom Dimension a name and save before closing.
Step 4. Apply your dimension.
From there, you can apply your custom Channel Grouping dimension anywhere within the app.
You can access your Custom Dimension as a breakdown within the breakdown list in a Custom Report, or anywhere in the app:
You can access your Custom Dimension as a filter within the filter list in a Custom Report, or anywhere in the app:
Step 5. If you need to edit your Custom Dimension to adjust your channel groupings, you can do so within your Custom Dimension list (which you can access from the Custom Report menu). See below for a visual of how to edit your Custom Dimensions.
