When you update the UTM parameters on your ad sources, you will reset your learnings — but you can still retain your social proof within Facebook Ads.

How-To: Use Polar UTMs Without Losing Social Proof

Step 1: Navigate to your ad preview within Facebook Ads Manager.

Step 2: Select Share > Share Facebook post with comments.

Step 3: That will open up a new tab with your post. Navigate to the url at the top of that new tab, and copy the portion of the url that contains the post ID. Note: The post ID will be the 10-20 digit string of numbers following /post/ in the url.

Step 4: Navigate back to your Facebook Ads Manager and create a new ad wherever you'd like it to be. You can name the ad whatever you'd like as well.

Important: Within Ad Setup, instead of selecting "Create ad", use the dropdown menu to select "Use Existing post". Underneath that section, select "Enter post ID" and paste the post ID that you copied from Step 3 and click "Submit".

If you receive an error that the Post ID cannot be used, please try the following troubleshooting methods:

Method 1:

  • Step 1: Click “Edit” on the ad you’d like to extract the Post ID from.

  • Step 2: Click the “Share” dropdown from the upper right-hand corner.

  • Step 3: Under “See Post”, click Facebook Post with Comments.

  • Step 4: Click on the time stamp (i.e. April 11, 2022).

  • Step 5: Copy the post ID from the web URL.

Method 2:

  • Step 1: In business manager, click the "hamburger" icon (three stacked lines) in the upper left-hand corner.

  • Step 2: Scroll down until you find “Page Posts”, then select that option.

  • Step 3: Select “Ad Posts” from the left-hand panel.

  • Step 4: Search and find your ad, then copy the numbers in the corresponding “ID” column.

Step 5: Enter the URL tracking parameters for Polar (see below).

utm_source=facebook&campaign_id={{campaign.id}}&ad_id={{ad.id}}&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_term={{adset.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}&adset_id={{adset.id}}

Now, once you've finalized and published the ad, you'll be able to keep all of your social proof and still use the updated UTM parameters necessary for Polar Pixel attribution.
