How can I use regional/state-level filters, and why might some states be missing?

TRAC offers powerful filtering options, including the ability to filter by region/state both at search set up and within your data set. However, users may sometimes notice that certain regions/states are missing from the available options. This article explains how to use region/state-level filters and provide insights into why some regions/states might not appear.

Search Set Up - Applying a region/state filter

When applying a location at search set up via boolean, you will see a list of countries and regions to select from. As you can see from the example image below, the UK is split regionally into England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the United States is split regionally by state.

Filtering within your search - Applying a region/state filter

TRAC allows users to refine their search results using various filters. One of the location filtering options is the Region filter, which includes state-level filtering. This feature is particularly useful for narrowing down search results to specific geographic areas.

How to Apply State-Level Filters

To apply state-level filters in TRAC Search:

  1. Open the Filters section in TRAC Search.

  2. Navigate to the Demographics tab.

  3. Locate the Region section.

  4. Select the desired state from the list of available options.

This process enables you to focus your search results on specific regions/states, making it easier to find relevant information.

Limitations of Region Level Filters

While the Region filter is a powerful tool, there are some limitations to be aware of:

  • Data Availability: When narrowing your search by region, you should expect to see the number of results returned to be significantly reduced. This is because very few data sources collect regional level geographic data on their users, this predominantly comes from X data, and therefore the search will only return the data that matches your criteria.

  • Missing States in the filter: Within your search, when filtering by region, the filter will only show the list of regions that have been captured from users in the data set. If users do not include precise location information in their profiles or if the data source cannot collect this data, certain states may not appear as selectable options in the filter.
