To get the most out Narratives, it's important to understand how to effectively use the search functionality. In this article, we'll take a deep dive into the search capabilities in Narratives AI.
Searching for Topics
When searching, you can use a combination of keywords and operators to refine your results. Keywords are the words or phrases you enter to find relevant content. Operators are special symbols or words that help you connect and refine your keywords. By combining keywords and operators, you can create targeted searches to find exactly what you need. This is referred to as Boolean searches, for example:
Use `AND` to find narratives containing multiple keywords (e.g., "climate AND change").
Use `OR` to find narratives that match at least one keyword (e.g., "climate OR weather").
Use `NOT` to exclude narratives matching a keyword (e.g., "climate NOT policy").
All keywords entered will be treated as a phrase, so there is no need to add quotation marks.
Note that up to 200 words can be queried in a single search
Searching by Media Type
When searching, you can specify to search for narratives in the media, or for narratives in the public. Public narratives currently come from X data with other social data sources like Bluesky, Threads, Facebook and Instagram coming in the near future. Media narratives come from Global online news data.
Specifying Date Range
By default, the date filter will be set to the last 3 months.
Specify a date range to search for narratives about your topic over a specific period of time.
Using the date drop-down, you can either select from one of the quick select date options or set a custom range.
Our database contains narratives back to 1st January 2023 and is constantly building, so you can chose any period from the first narratives collected right up to the present date.
You can currently search for 12 month chunks at a time.
Previous Search History
Access your previous searches to save time and effort in re-entering search strings.
How it works:
Up to 5 searches are remembered, with newer searches replacing the oldest.
A drop-down list displays the past 5 searches in the order of most recent to oldest.
Clicking on a query in the list runs the search.
Sorting Results
Sort narratives based on relevance, and get a significance score for each Narrative. The Significance score of a narrative shows how large it is in comparison to other narratives in this search. It is on scale of 1-100 and takes into account the amount of content contributing to each narrative within your selected search date range, compared with the total amount of content that is part of all conversations matching your search.
Search Relevance Weighting
Search relevance is crucial to provide the most accurate and useful results. To achieve this, we employ Match Weighings. Query matches are weighted based on which part of a narrative they match, and the count of content matches per narrative. This means that:
A query match with daily or weekly topics in a narrative will have a higher relevance score than a query match with a single context bundle in a narrative.
A query match with two pieces of content in a single narrative will produce a higher relevance score than a match with a single piece of content in a narrative.
This weighting system ensures that results with more comprehensive matches are prioritised, giving you the most relevant information first.
