How to Remove Saved RDP Credentials on Mac (Windows App)

Remove or update saved RDP credentials on your Mac in the Windows App after a password change or reinstall.

If your Mac keeps auto-filling old login details when connecting to your VPS, you can update or remove the saved RDP credentials in the Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop). Follow the steps below.

Step #1: Open the App's Settings

  1. Launch the Windows App (or Microsoft Remote Desktop on older versions).

  2. In the top menu bar, click Windows App (or Microsoft Remote Desktop).

  3. Select Settings… from the dropdown menu.

Step #2: Go to the Credentials Tab

  1. In the Settings/Preferences window, click the Credentials tab (called User Accounts in some versions).

  2. Find the saved account used for your VPS connection in the list on the left.

Step #3: Update or Remove the Saved Credentials

To update (recommended)

  1. Select the saved account.

  2. Click into the Username and Password fields and enter your new details.

  3. Save and close Settings.

To remove

  1. Select the saved entry in the list.

  2. Delete it using the (minus) button.

  3. On your next connection attempt, the app will prompt you for a username and password.

Step #4: Reconnect

Double-click your VPS connection to reconnect. If you removed the credentials, enter the new username and password when prompted — the app will offer to save them for future sessions. Always copy the login details from your VPS dashboard to be sure you're using the current ones.

Still Failing? Delete and Re-Add the Connection

Sometimes the app keeps auto-filling old credentials even after you've removed them, usually because the connection itself still references a stale account. Fix it by recreating the connection:

  1. In the main window, right-click (or Control-click) the saved VPS connection and choose Delete.

  2. Remove the old account from the Credentials tab if it's still listed.

  3. Click + → Add PC, enter your VPS IP, and assign your new credentials.

  4. Connect and confirm the new login works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Microsoft Remote Desktop store passwords on Mac? In the app's Credentials (User Accounts) list, backed by the macOS Keychain. Managing them through the app's Settings is the safest approach.

Why do I get a login error after changing my VPS password? The app is auto-submitting the old saved password. Update or delete the saved account under Settings → Credentials.

Is the Windows App the same as Microsoft Remote Desktop? Yes — Microsoft rebranded the macOS client as the "Windows App." The credential settings work the same way.
