What is pass-through dialing and when should I use it?

Pass-through dialing joins a dialer session through your own phone for call audio while the workflow stays on your computer screen.

Pass-through dialing means joining a call session through your own phone instead of through your computer's microphone and speakers. The audio for every call in the session passes through your phone line. You hear donors and they hear you on the handset you already use, while the rest of the dialer (the contact list, notes, dispositions, and navigation) stays on your computer screen.

When you start a dialer session, Raise More shows a window titled "Connect to dialer session" with several ways to join. Pass-through dialing covers the options that ring your phone or let you call in, as opposed to "Join via browser," which uses your computer's audio.

What it is

In a pass-through session, your computer screen drives the workflow and your phone carries the voice. You still see the donor profile, take notes, set call dispositions, and move to the next contact on your screen. The actual conversation happens on your phone. This is useful when your computer audio is unreliable or when you simply prefer talking on a real phone.

Note: "pass-through dialing" is a general description of this approach. The buttons in the product use plainer names like "Call me" and "Dial into." There is no button labeled "pass-through."

How to use it

On the "Connect to dialer session" screen you have these phone-based options:

  • Call me. Enter the phone number you want Raise More to ring in the field at the top, then press the "Call me" button. Raise More calls that number. While it is calling you, the button reads "Pick up and dial 0 to connect." Pick up and follow the prompt to join the session. Your number is pre-filled from your profile when one is set, but you can type a different number.

  • Dial in. You can call the dialer phone number yourself and enter your session code. The screen shows a tooltip with the instruction: "You can also call [dialer number] and enter the code [your session code]* to connect."

  • Scan the QR code (on desktop). Under the "or scan" divider, scan the QR code with your phone's camera to start the call to the dialer number with your session code already attached.

  • Tap to dial (on mobile). On a phone-sized screen, a button reads "Dial into [dialer number], [session code]*". Tapping it opens your phone dialer with the number and code filled in.

After the call starts, Raise More shows a brief message telling you the call has been initiated and to pick up your phone and then press any key to join the call session. Once you are connected, the dialer treats you as joined and you can start calling contacts.

If you only need to watch a session without talking, "Join without audio" is also available, but that is not pass-through dialing because no phone audio is connected.

When to choose it over browser dialing

"Join via browser" sends and receives audio through your computer using your microphone and speakers. Choose a phone-based option instead when:

  • Your computer audio or microphone is poor, or you do not have a headset.

  • You prefer talking on a real phone.

  • Your internet connection is unreliable and browser audio cuts out.

  • You want to use a real phone line for the conversation.

If your microphone is blocked in the browser, the screen warns: "Microphone is blocked. Enable it in your browser settings to join via browser." That is another reason to use a phone-based option instead.

What to expect

  • With "Call me," Raise More rings the number you entered. You answer your phone, follow the prompt to connect, and you are in the session.

  • With "Dial in," the QR code, or the mobile tap-to-dial button, you call the dialer number and your session code connects you to your session.

  • Either way, your phone stays on the line for the whole session. You make and end calls to donors from the buttons on your computer screen, and the audio runs through your phone.

  • The screen, the notes, and the contact navigation all work exactly the same as a browser session. Only the audio path is different.

FAQ

Does pass-through dialing cost me phone minutes?

You are on a normal phone call to the dialer number for the length of your session, so standard charges from your phone carrier apply the same as any other call you make.

Can I switch from phone to browser audio mid-session?

Yes. If you connected by phone and then choose "Join via browser," Raise More asks you to confirm, warning that you are currently connected by phone and that switching to browser will hang up your phone call. Confirm to switch.

Which number does "Call me" use?

It pre-fills the primary phone number on your profile when one is set. You can change it in the field before pressing "Call me." If your profile has no phone number, add one to your profile first.

Why do I see "Pick up and dial 0 to connect"?

That is the "Call me" button telling you the call is on its way. Answer your phone and follow the prompt to join the session.

Can someone else join my session by phone too?

Yes. A session supports more than one participant, and another person can join by phone, by scanning the QR code, or by browser.
