The audience for an email campaign is set in the To step of the campaign editor. You build a filter using the same filter and query tools available on the People page, and that filter is saved with the campaign as a draft until you finalize and send.
Where to find the To step
Open or create an email campaign. The campaign editor is a series of accordion steps. To is the second step (after Campaign Name). Click Edit Audience to open it.
Building your filter
Inside the To step you see a full contact table with the filter builder. You can filter by any field available on the People page, including:
List membership (filter by a saved list)
Tags (include or exclude people with specific tags)
Donation history (amount, date, campaign)
Pledge history
Contact fields (name, location, email, phone)
Interaction history
Add one or more filter rules. The table below the filter updates in real time to show the people who match. The step header shows the count of matched people once the filter is set.
You are not required to add any filter. If you leave the filter empty and click Save Target Audience, the system treats that as targeting your entire database. When you later click Finalize on an empty filter, you will be prompted to type the word everyone before the send can proceed.
Saving the audience
When you are satisfied with the filter, click Save Target Audience. This saves the filter as a draft on the campaign. You can return to the To step and edit the filter at any time before you finalize.
When the audience is locked in
The filter is re-evaluated and the final recipient list is materialized when you click Finalize in the Review and Send step. At that point the system runs your saved filter against the current state of your contacts and writes each matched person into the send list. People added to your database after finalization are not included, and people who were matched at finalization are not removed if they later stop matching the filter.
Automatic exclusions applied at send time
Regardless of who the filter matches, the following contacts are automatically excluded when each individual email is sent:
People marked as Do Not Contact
Email addresses with a removal reason of Unsubscribe, Bounce, Spam Complaint, or Repeated Soft Bounce
These exclusions are applied per email address at send time. You do not need to add a filter rule to exclude them.
