Understanding Custom Dimensions

Custom Dimensions are user-specified attributes that aren't available in Standard Dimensions. They allow you to classify and analyze data particularly relevant to your organization. By creating custom dimensions, such as "Query Ranking Category" or "Page Ranking Category," you can generate tailored reports and gain deeper insights into your business operations.

Why Use Custom Dimensions?

Custom Dimensions offer the flexibility to:

  • Classify Data: Organize your data into categories that are meaningful to your organization.

  • Analyze Specific Attributes: Focus on specific attributes that are not covered by Standard Dimensions, giving you more control over your reports.

  • Gain Additional Insights: By tailoring your dimensions, you can extract insights that are more aligned with your business goals.

How to Create Custom Dimensions

Follow these steps to create your Custom Dimensions:

  1. Provide a Field Name and Description:

    • Field Name: Enter a clear and descriptive name for the custom dimension to identify it later quickly.

    • Field Description: Add a brief description to explain the purpose of this dimension.

2. Specify the Channel and Object:

  • Channel: Select the channel (e.g., website, mobile app) where the custom dimension will be applied.

  • Object: Choose the specific object (e.g., user, session) to which the custom dimension will relate.

3. Select the Data Type:

  • For Custom Dimensions, the only available data type is 'Text'.

4. Define Buckets: Buckets allow you to group conditions, helping to classify your data further.

i. Create Conditions and Groups:

  • Conditions: These are individual criteria or values you want to classify your data.

Groups: A collection of conditions that you can name for easy reference.

ii. Add Conditions:

  • Click on 'Add Conditions' to create a new row where you can define a condition.

Based on your needs, select the appropriate operator ('And' or 'Or') to link the conditions.

iii. Create New Buckets:

  • Click 'Add New Bucket' for additional groupings to create more buckets.

You can also copy existing conditions into new buckets if needed.

5. Hit 'Create':

    • Once all the necessary information and conditions are set, click 'Create' to finalize the Custom Dimension.

Summary

Custom Dimensions provide a powerful way to organize and analyze data specific to your organization.

By defining attributes not covered by Standard Dimensions, you can tailor your reports to align with your business goals.

Creating Custom Dimensions involves setting a field name and description, selecting the appropriate channel and object, and defining buckets that group your conditions for more precise data classification.
