Can I allow only a few apps and block everything else?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

We're here to help.

First off, we know this can be frustrating. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

What is the "All Except" feature?

The “All Except” option lets you block everything except a few key apps (Ex: Google Maps, Alarm, etc). This is currently available for "Block Now" and "Downtime" blocks and can be a great way to simplify your setup.

How do I use "All Except" feature?

Go to "Roots > Blocking > Add a Block (top of screen) > Select Downtime > Then select What to Block > Tap on Selected > Choose All Except > Select apps that you don't want to be blocked (all other apps will be blocked). (see image below)

Note

We’ll soon be adding “All Except” to “All Day (Limited Unblocks)” — stay tuned for updates!

Unfortunately, due to an Apple limitation, we won’t be able to bring “All Except” to “Time Limit”. 😔

Alternative approach for "Time Limit" and "All Day" blocks:

If you'd prefer to use "Time Limit" or "All Day (Limited Unblocks)" blocks instead, you can select entire categories in the app picker (like "Social," "Games," or "Entertainment"). Each full category only counts as one item toward the 50-item limit, which helps you block many apps efficiently.

Important note about the "Social" category

If you select Apple's "Social" category, it will block ALL apps within that category - including communication apps like WhatsApp and Messages. Since this is Apple's categorization, we can't control which apps are grouped together. To avoid blocking apps you need, we recommend searching for and selecting individual apps one at a time instead.
