Nomad Insurance Essential (Updated Version): Medical coverage during visits to your home country

Home country coverage, going home

This article applies to the updated Nomad Insurance Essential plan version effective February 2026. If you are not sure which plan version you are under, please check with our Customer Care team.

Nomad Insurance Essential is designed to cover you outside your home country, with limited emergency coverage during short visits home.

What is my home country?

For Nomad Insurance Essential, your home country is defined as:

  • Where someone principally resides and receives regular mail

  • Where they would return once done traveling

  • Where they would want to be returned in case of trip interruption or repatriation

👉 Once you choose your home country for an active policy, it's not easy to change.

👉 Please note: U.S. citizens (including citizens of U.S. Territories) are not eligible for coverage within the U.S. (including U.S. Territories), regardless of the location of their principal residence, except as provided under home country coverage.

Am I eligible in my home country?

  1. Eligibility and Coverage:

  • You are eligible for emergency medical coverage in your home country, only for unexpected medical emergency conditions during short visits.

  • Your visit to your home country must not be for the purpose of obtaining treatment for an illness or injury that occurred while abroad.

  1. Coverage duration:

When your mode of payment is one payment for a 364-day active insurance period:

  • Up to 90 days per visit in your home country, per 180 days of active insurance period (45 days if your home country is the US)

  • Coverage applies for visits in your home country for up to a total of 179 days per 364 days of active insurance period, provided that no single home country visit exceeds 90 consecutive days

When your mode of payment is other than one payment for a 364-day period:

  • 30 days per visit within a rolling 90-day period (15 days if your home country is the US)

  1. Important Conditions:

  • Your insurance plan must be active for at least 90 days before you can use home country coverage.

  • Your visit to your home country must take place after the insurance start date and originate from abroad.

  • You'll need to prove your entry and exit dates (e.g., flight tickets) to support your claim, and both dates must fall within the period of active insurance.

  • If you remain in your home country longer than the applicable duration, coverage is paused until you leave your home country. Coverage resumes once you are abroad.

This benefit applies only while you are actively travelling. If you return to your home country and do not intend to continue travelling, this coverage does not apply.

Am I eligible after my plan ends?

Yes, if treatment began before your plan ended.

  • The benefit period ensures eligible conditions are covered for up to 90 days from the date of diagnosis or treatment start

  • Applies only to conditions that began while your insurance was active

  • Does not apply to new illnesses or injuries that occur after your plan ends

Does the benefit period also apply in my home country?

❌ Benefit period does not apply in your home country
