Understanding Canvases in Showit

Written by Sam

Canvases are one of the core building blocks of your Showit website. Think of a canvas as a section of a page. Instead of designing one long web page from top to bottom, Showit breaks each page into individual canvases that stack together.

For example, your homepage might include separate canvases for:

  • Hero Banner

  • About Section

  • Books/latest release

  • Newsletter sign up

  • Directory

  • Footer

Each canvas can be edited independently making it easy to update one section without affecting the rest of the page.

Page Canvases vs. Site Canvases

There are two types of canvases in Showit and it's important to know the difference.

Page Canvases

A Page Canvas only appears on the page you're currently editing. If you make changes to a Page Canvas, those changes will only be visible on that specific page. For example, editing the hero section on your Home page won't affect the hero section on your About page.

Site Canvases

A Site Canvas is shared across multiple pages on your website.

Common Site Canvases include:

  • Navigation

  • Footer

  • Announcement Bar

Because these canvases are shared, any changes you make will automatically update everywhere that Site Canvas is being used. Before making changes to a Site Canvas, it's always a good idea to double check that you want those updates to appear across your entire website.

Duplicating a Canvas

Need another section with a similar layout? You can duplicate an existing canvas instead of building one from scratch. This is a great option if you'd like to reuse a layout while changing the content, images, or colors.

Reordering Canvases

Canvases can easily be rearranged within a page. Simply drag and drop a canvas using the Layer panel in the left sidebar into its new position to change the order that sections appear on your website.

Deleting a Canvas

If you no longer need a section, you can delete the entire canvas. Before deleting, make sure it's the correct canvas! Once it's removed, you'll need to recreate it if you change your mind.

Good to Know

If you're updating your header or footer, you're almost always working with a Site Canvas. Any changes you make there will automatically appear across every page that uses that canvas.
