How do Transfers Work?

Transfers are how money moves between your accounts automatically or manually once a rule runs or you trigger one yourself.

They might look simple on your Money Map, but there’s deeper infrastructure under the hood making everything work.

Some quick terminology to help understand transfer timing:

Internal accounts are any Pods or Income Sources. These accounts live within Sequence and are held at our partner bank, Thread.

External accounts are any accounts outside of Sequence. This includes accounts at institutions like Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and other banks.

How Each Transfer Type Works

Internal → Internal

From one Sequence-owned (Thread) account to another

  • This is fully internal, no rails, no delays

  • Because both accounts are within Thread, we move the money instantly

  • You’ll see the result on your map in real time, even on weekends or holidays

Internal → External

From a Sequence (Thread) account to an account you own elsewhere

  • This is a same-day ACH transfer

  • You have full control, so Sequence can initiate and push the funds

  • There’s a 3:00 PM local time cutoff - transfers after that land the next business day

External → External

From one external account to another external account

  • This takes anywhere from 2–3 banking days

  • We need verification to pull founds out of the source account

  • Sequence then routes the funds through a holding account to the final destination

We can’t move money directly between two external accounts we don’t control, that's a security and control limitation.

Instead, we route the transfer through a Thread-owned account in the background.

Here’s what happens:

  1. We pull funds into a Thread account

  2. Then we push the funds out to the destination external account

This adds time, usually 2 to 3 business days, but gives us the ability to safely move funds end-to-end.

How to View Pending & Past Transfers

You can check on any transfer’s status or history by:

  • Clicking into a pod, income source, or account in the map

  • Visiting the Transfer History page from the main navigation in the top left

There, you’ll see:

  • Transfer amounts and directions

  • Status updates (Pending, In Progress, Completed)

  • Where the funds currently are

Common Examples

  • Your paycheck or incoming funds go to Sequence → Split instantly between 3 pods

  • You send funds from an Owners Pay Pod to your external accounts → Same day ACH

  • You move money from one external checking account to another → Takes 2–3 days

You can also use rules or manual transfers to make all of these happen seamlessly.
