Working with other people in Sequence

Written by Ari Schlacht

Sequence isn't only for you. You can bring in a business partner, give your accountant a view, or pay contractors, employees, and family. The trick is picking the right setup for each relationship, because they work differently. Here's how to choose.

Someone who should run the finances with you

A business partner, a spouse who shares the accounts, a co-founder. Add them as a Co-owner.

  • A co-owner has full access: they can edit accounts, Pods, and Income Sources, create and change Rules, move money, and download documents.

  • Adding a co-owner makes the account jointly owned, and the beneficiary updates to show both names (for example, "Alex Morgan" becomes "Alex Morgan & Jamie Lee"). That joint beneficiary is what lets you open joint Pods and connect joint external accounts.

  • Access is account-wide, so a co-owner can see and act on everything, not just one account.

Someone who only needs to look

An accountant, bookkeeper, advisor, or assistant who needs visibility but shouldn't move money. Add them as a Viewer.

  • Viewers can see balances, activity, and account details, and download reports.

  • Viewers can't edit Rules, move money, or create and manage Pods.

A viewer is the safest way to give someone insight without handing over control.

Paying people who aren't on your account

Contractors, employees, family, a landlord, or a client you owe. You don't add them as a user at all. Instead, add their account as a Destination account and send funds to it.

  • A Destination account is any account you add by entering its routing and account numbers. It's send-only: you can push money to it, but you can't pull money out of it or see its balance.

  • This keeps their banking separate from yours, they never get access to your Sequence, you just route money out to them.

Quick guide

  • Runs the finances with you (partner, co-founder) → Co-owner

  • Needs to see, not touch (accountant, advisor) → Viewer

  • You just need to pay them (contractor, family, landlord) → Destination account
