Australian or NZ companies or ETFs

Prices for Australian and NZ investments are delayed by at least 20 minutes.

You'll need to have the correct currency to invest in companies and funds across the different exchanges. If you don't have enough of the correct currency, you can exchange currency in advance, or you can exchange currency when you place a buy order. Read about foreign exchange fees.

Market and limit orders for Australian or NZ shares may be sent to market individually, or sent to market with similar orders placed by other investors—this is called ‘aggregation’.

When orders are aggregated, they retain their priority. If an aggregated order only partially fills, and your order was placed first, this means it’ll be filled first.

Read about order processing times.

To place an order:

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Select Invest.

  3. Search for an investment. Use the filters, or the ‘Search all investments’ field to enter your own search term. Select See all’ for further filter options.

  4. Select an investment you’re keen to invest in (don’t forget to do your due diligence!)

  5. Select Buy in the bottom right corner.

  6. Choose whether you want to place a market buy order or a limit buy order in fractional or whole shares. If you don’t have enough money in the correct currency, you’ll be prompted to top up your Sharesies Wallet or exchange currency.

  7. On the review page, check that your order details are correct and fees that will apply. Select Buy to place your order. Order processing times.

US investments

If you haven’t bought US investments before, you’ll need to give us some extra tax info before you can invest. Prices for US investments are delayed by at least 20 minutes.

Before investing in an American depositary receipt (ADR), there are some extra details you should know.

You’ll need US dollars (USD) to buy US investments. You can exchange money in advance, whenever you want, or you can exchange money when you place a buy order.

To place an order:

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Select Invest.

  3. Search for an investment. Use the existing search filters, or the ‘Search all investments’ field to enter your own search term. Select ‘See all’ for further options.

  4. Select the investment you’re keen to invest in.

  5. Select Buy in the bottom right corner.

  6. Before investing in US shares for the first time, you’ll need to answer a few questions, and complete a W-8 BEN tax form (or W-9 form if you’re a US citizen or green card holder).

  7. Choose whether you want to place a market buy order or limit buy order. You can place a limit buy order in whole shares only. If you don’t have enough money in the local currency, you’ll be prompted to top up your Wallet or exchange money.

  8. Check that your order details are correct, and any fees that will apply. Select Buy to place your order.

Orders may not fill completely at once—learn more about partially filled orders.
