Move investments between your portfolios

How to move investments, what can move, and what happens to your history and returns.

Written by Sharesies Help

There’s no change of ownership when you move investments between your portfolios as they remain within your Sharesies account. This means there are no fees, and no tax implications for moving investments between your portfolios.

Before moving investments

There are a few things to be aware of before moving an investment.

Only settled investments can move

You can only move investments that have settled in your portfolio.

If you have an order on the market, or one that’s recently filled, those shares might not be ready to move yet.

Once the transaction is complete and settled, they’ll be available to move. This usually takes a couple of business days.

Your history doesn’t move

History for past buy orders, sell orders, and dividends stay in the portfolio they happened in. You can still access this history in your reports.

How to move investments

  • Log in to Sharesies.

  • Go to the portfolio you want to move investments from, tap Manage, then tap Move investments. (From an empty portfolio, you can also tap Move shares to get started.)

  • On the What to know about moving investments screen, read the key points, then tap Next.

  • Choose which portfolios to move investments From and To, then tap Next.

  • Choose the investments you’d like to move—you can select one or more—then tap Next.

  • For each investment, enter how much to move. Switch between Dollars and Percentage, or tap Move all to move your whole holding of that investment.

  • Check how each investment will appear in its new portfolio on the Confirm move screen, review the details, then tap Confirm.

Your investments will move to the new portfolio once the move is complete.

Moving investments in different currencies

If you’re moving investments held in different currencies, the total value shown is an estimate in NZD.

Currency exchange rates and share prices can change, which affects the estimated value of the investments you’re moving.

Investments that can’t be moved

These investments currently can’t be moved between portfolios:

  • managed funds

  • delisted investments.

The ‘Investment moved’ activity

When you move investments between your portfolios, an Investment moved entry is added to your activity—one entry for each investment you move.

Tap an entry to see the details, including the:

  • investment

  • date the move completed

  • portfolios it moved from and to

  • number of shares moved

  • investment value moved.

When you move an investment between your portfolios, your investing history stays in the portfolio it happened in, and the moved investment starts fresh in its new portfolio.

Why your activity history doesn’t move

For accurate reporting, we keep the record of your investing history in the portfolio where it took place. For example, past activities like buy orders, sell orders, and dividends stay in the original portfolio—they don’t move across with the investment.

You can always access your full investing history by downloading a report.

Moving part or all of an investment

  • If you move part of your holding of an investment, the historic transaction data stays in the original portfolio. The data for the portion you’ve moved starts fresh from the date of the move.

  • If you move all of an investment, its historic transaction data can still be downloaded in your reports, and the investment history starts fresh in its new portfolio.

A quick example

Say you move 50% of an investment from one portfolio to another. Before the move, all of that investment’s history and returns sit in the original portfolio. After the move, the original portfolio keeps its history, and the new portfolio shows the moved half —so its graph begins at the point of the move.

Finding your investing history

Your investing history is always available. To download it, go to Manage > Download reports from a portfolio.

Transaction history in your Wallet

Your Wallet is shared across all of your portfolios, so top-ups, dividends, sale proceeds, and currency exchanges from every portfolio sit in one place.

Your Wallet’s transaction history notes which portfolio (or other Sharesies product) each transaction relates to—so you can tell where a buy, sell, dividend, or exchange came from.

To view it, go to Wallet and look under Transaction history.
