Transfer in
You can transfer investments you own, including company shares, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and NZ Bonds, into Sharesies from the following exchanges:
New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZSX)
New Zealand Debt Exchange (NZDX)
Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
Nasdaq
Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)
We don’t charge a fee to transfer investments into Sharesies.
When you transfer investments into Sharesies, you still own the investments. Sharesies Nominee Limited is used to hold your money and investments on bare trust for you.
Once the transferred shares are in your Portfolio, you can view, buy, and sell them all in one place. We'll take care of some of the admin for you—like organising dividend and bond coupon payments, and facilitating some corporate actions for you.
Please note: NZ Bonds are transfer-only investments. This means you can transfer them into or out of Sharesies, but you can’t buy or sell them through the platform.
Transfer out
To transfer NZSX-listed shares or NZDX listed bonds out of Sharesies, you’ll need a Common Shareholder Number. If you don’t already have one of these, we may be able to create one for you if you reach out to transfers@sharesies.co.nz.
For US shares, you’ll need an account with a broker or platform other than Sharesies that allows US share transfers.
For ASX-listed shares, you’ll need a Shareholder Reference Number or Holder Identification Number (HIN). If you don’t already have an SRN, one can be created for you as part of the transfer process.
A investment transfer fee applies for investment transfers out of Sharesies.
Transfer between Sharesies accounts
On request, we can transfer shares from one Sharesies account to another Sharesies account, if you meet a set of compliance requirements.
Only shares can be transferred. We can’t transfer:
managed fund units between Sharesies accounts
US over-the-counter (OTC) investments
cash from any PIE Save accounts or Save accounts
cash in your Wallet
cash in a Spend account
Sharesies Crypto investments
your car insurance with Cove
your Sharesies KiwiSaver Scheme portfolio.
For transfers from an NZ Sharesies account to an Australia Sharesies account (and vice versa), both accounts must belong to the same beneficial owner.
The transfer may also reset the investment’s cost basis from the perspective of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)—if you need guidance, we recommend you speak with a qualified financial advisor.
