Guide to Introduction Templates 🎯

How to use Introduction Templates to help structure introductions and save setup time

Written by Conor Hughes

Most tutors run their intros with a similar structure each time - the same prompts, questions, and scheduling details. Introduction Templates let you set that up once and have it load automatically into every new intro.

What's in the default template?

If you don't set your own, every new introduction will use our standard template. It's a basic structure designed to cover the things most intros need:

  • A short intro of yourself and your experience

  • The student's intro and goals

  • Diagnostic prompts to gauge where they're starting from

  • Your teaching approach

  • Scheduling details

  • The basics of using Sherpa

It's a good outline for most introductions, but you may want to customise this to suit your own style and introduction structure.

Creating your own template

You can tailor them to your style, your subject, your typical student - or just rearrange things the way you actually like to run an intro.

Here's how:

  1. Head to Templates β†’ Create a new Template

  2. You'll land in the standard classroom

  3. Set it up however you like: whiteboard tabs, text boxes, document tabs, your own PDFs, anything you'd normally add to an introduction classroom

  4. Give your template a name

  5. Hit Save in the top right

Your new template will appear on the Templates page, ready to use.

You can create as many as you want. You might want to create multiple - split by subject, or one specifically for SEND students.

Setting your default template

Your default is the template that loads automatically into every new introduction once it's confirmed.

To change it: on the Templates page, click the three dots next to the template you want, then Set as default.

One thing to know: changing your default only affects new introductions. Anything already confirmed will keep whatever template it was given at the time.

Using a different template for one specific intro

Sometimes a particular enquiry calls for a different setup - maybe the student has a very specific goal, or they're returning after a break and you don't need the full diagnostic. You can swap templates on a single introduction without touching your default.

From the Bookings page:

  1. Click Prepare on the introduction

  2. Open the template dropdown

  3. Pick the template you want

You'll also see an indicator next to each introduction showing which template (if any) is attached.

Can I turn templates off entirely?

Yep! If you don't want any template automatically uploaded - just click on the current default and then 'Remove default'.

Again, this will only affect new introductions. All existing confirmed introductions will already have their templates uploaded.

What about regular bookings?

Templates are intro-only for now, but we're looking into adding 'Lesson Plans' for bookings. We're thinking that tutors could share practice questions and other lesson resources, which could then be combined into (optionally) shareable Lesson Plans.

If you've got any feedback or ideas on how that could work - or any feedback on the feature in general - get in touch!
