Troubleshooting web (desktop) recordings

A full troubleshooting guide for recording in the Siro web app — setup and permissions, recordings that won't start, interruptions mid-conversation, saving, audio problems, and processing

Written by Ethan Peterson-New

Overview

This guide covers everything that can go wrong when recording from the Siro web app in your browser — before you start, during the conversation, at save time, and after. Issues like these are rare, and most are prevented by a few simple habits.

For a walkthrough of how web recording works normally, see Recording on Web (Desktop).

Note: this article is specific to recordings you start with the Record button in the Siro web app. For recordings made on the Siro mobile app, see My recording was interrupted. For virtual meetings captured by the Siro Notetaker, see Recording meetings automatically with the Siro Notetaker.

The 60-Second Checklist

Before a conversation you can't afford to lose:

  • Record in Chrome, kept up to date (Chrome is not technically required, but it is recommend)

  • Fully quit other meeting apps (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, Slack huddles) so nothing else is holding the mic

  • Make sure your computer won't go to sleep, and plug in if the battery is low

  • Leave the Siro tab open for the whole conversation, and end with End recording → Save

  • If you're on a VPN and have had trouble before, disconnect it

Audio Problems

Before You Record

Run the setup test once

The web app can confirm your permissions ahead of time, so your first recording starts in one click instead of three. Open Settings (click your avatar at the bottom of the left sidebar), find Test your recording setup, and click Run setup test. It checks your microphone, camera, and screen sharing.

Note: browsers don't allow screen-capture permission to be granted in advance, so that check confirms the capability is available rather than pre-approving it.

Microphone permissions

If you never see a microphone prompt, or the browser says "Microphone blocked":

  1. In Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar and open Site settings

  2. Set Microphone to Allow

  3. Refresh the page and try Record again

If your company manages Chrome policies, you may need an IT admin to allow microphone access for the Siro site.

Test your microphone

You don't need any special setting to test your mic — start a recording and check your live input:

  1. Click Record in the left sidebar

  2. Watch the mic level dots (····) in the bottom toolbar. They should move as you speak

  3. If they stay flat, click the chevron next to the mic icon and choose the correct input device, then confirm the same mic is active in your computer's sound settings

  4. Once confirmed, click End recording and discard the test

Auto-record isn't triggering

Auto-record listens locally for a spoken start command and begins recording when it hears one. If it isn't firing:

  • Confirm Auto-record is toggled on in Settings

  • Check your start prompts — you can keep several active at once. Add a phrase you actually say naturally at the top of a conversation

  • Use the Test button in the Auto-record settings panel and speak the phrase normally

  • Make sure the Siro tab is open — auto-record only listens while the web app is loaded

Note: the Auto-record Test button only confirms Siro can detect your spoken start command. It is not a microphone test — use the mic level dots for that.

All listening for the start command happens on your device. Nothing is sent to Siro until recording actually begins.

When a Recording Won't Start

"Couldn't start recording"

If Siro can't reach your microphone when you click Record, the recorder stays open and shows "Couldn't start recording" with a Try again button. Fix the cause — plug the mic back in, quit the app that's holding it, or pick a different input device — then click Try again without leaving the page.

If Try again keeps failing, work through the steps below.

Record does nothing, or the recording hangs on starting

  • Refresh the page and try again

  • Try an incognito window — this rules out browser extensions in one step

  • Disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, and script blockers for the Siro site. These are a common cause of a recorder that won't start

  • Disconnect your VPN and try again

  • Confirm you're in Chrome — other browsers handle microphone, camera, and background tabs differently

Your microphone is already in use

Another app holding the mic — Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, a Slack huddle, or a phone companion app — can block Siro from starting or capturing audio. Closing the window isn't always enough; quit the app fully, then try again.

When this stops the recording from starting you'll see the Couldn't start recording panel described above rather than the recorder closing — quit the other app, then click Try again.

Camera errors: "Could not start video source" / "Requested device not found"

These mean the browser couldn't open your camera — usually because another app is already using it, or because the selected camera is no longer connected. Your audio recording is not affected: Siro captures and analyzes the conversation without video.

Solutions:

  • Close other apps using the camera (Zoom, Meet, Teams, Photo Booth) and try again

  • Click the chevron next to the camera icon in the bottom toolbar and reselect your camera

  • If you don't need video, toggle the camera off and keep going

During a Recording

What's normal — messages that don't mean something broke

  • You can navigate freely inside the Siro web app. Moving to another page collapses the recorder into a compact indicator at the top of the left sidebar — red dot, live timer — and your recording keeps running. Click the expand icon to return to the full view. You don't need to stay on the recording screen

  • "Lost connection, trying to reconnect" — Siro keeps trying for up to about 10 minutes, so a brief network hiccup won't end your recording

  • "Check your microphone" or "Microphone switched" — Siro monitors your mic during the session. Make a sound and it confirms "We hear you!"; click Continue recording to dismiss. Your recording keeps running throughout

  • "Camera disconnected" — video only. Audio and the recording continue unaffected; reselect your camera to restore video

  • "Offline — Chat features paused" in the Halftime panel — Halftime needs internet, but as the message says, "Your recording is continuing normally"

The recording ended before you finished

A browser recording lives in the tab it was started in. The most common causes of an early end are:

  • The tab, window, or browser was closed. Anything after that point isn't captured. Leave the Siro tab open for the whole conversation — switching to other tabs and apps is fine

  • The computer went to sleep. Closing the lid for a moment is usually fine, but a machine that actually sleeps stops the browser. Keep your laptop awake and plugged in for long conversations, and check your power settings if they sleep on a short timer

  • The browser crashed or was quit. Close unused tabs and heavy apps before an important conversation

Always finish with End recording in the bottom toolbar, then Save.

Your headset or mic disconnected mid-conversation

Unplugging a USB headset, dropping Bluetooth, or switching input devices interrupts your audio. Siro automatically falls back to another available microphone and shows the "Microphone switched" dialog — but if no backup device is available, audio capture stops.

Solutions:

  • Connect and select your mic before clicking Record

  • Avoid switching or unplugging audio devices while recording

  • If a dialog appears, make a sound to confirm the new device is picking you up before continuing

Your connection dropped

Web recordings stream to Siro as you talk, so they need a live connection. If it can't be restored within the retry window, a Recording connection lost dialog appears: "The connection dropped and couldn't be restored. We've kept everything captured up to this point — end now to review and save it."

Solutions:

  • Choose End & save — everything captured up to the drop is preserved. Only choose Discard recording if you don't want any of it

  • Prefer stable Wi-Fi or a wired connection over a weak hotspot for long conversations

  • If you're on a VPN, try disconnecting

There is no pause on web

Unlike the mobile app, a browser recording runs from start to finish. End recording is final — there's no way to resume afterward or stitch two recordings together.

If you need a break mid-conversation, use Mute mic instead. The recording and timer keep running; your microphone simply stops being picked up.

You clicked the trash icon by accident

Clicking Trash opens a "Discard recording?" confirmation first — "This recording will be permanently discarded and cannot be recovered." Click Cancel to keep recording. If you already confirmed Discard, the recording cannot be recovered, by you or by Support.

Halftime isn't answering yet

If Halftime is enabled for your organization, the panel opens as soon as recording starts — but it needs transcript content before it can say anything useful. Its report and answers fill in after a few minutes of conversation (typically around 3–4 minutes). Early on it may have little to work with. If you don't see the panel at all, your organization may have Halftime turned off.

Saving Your Recording

When you click End recording, a Save Recording modal appears with Title, Conversation Type, and a Share with team option. Click Save, then keep the tab open until you land on the recording detail page.

The save screen is stuck, or the save failed

  • Give it a moment before touching anything — longer recordings take longer to finalize

  • Stay online and keep the tab open; don't close the browser or let the computer sleep

  • If it doesn't complete, refresh the page and check your Recordings list — the recording has often saved even if the screen didn't advance

  • If it isn't there, contact Support with the approximate date and time before starting a new recording

You saved with the wrong title or conversation type

Both can be corrected afterward from the recording detail page — no need to re-record. You can also set them mid-recording: the pencil icon next to the title, and the conversation type chip in the top bar next to the timer.

Note: Recording Outcome (e.g. "Products Sold", "Appointment Set") is assigned automatically by Siro's AI from the transcript — there's no manual Won/Lost selection at save time.

After the Recording

The recording isn't showing up

It can take a few minutes for a recording to appear in your Recordings list. Refresh the page if it hasn't appeared after ten minutes. You can jump to the list with G then R from anywhere in the web app.

It's stuck on "Analyzing" or "Processing"

After a recording is captured, Siro's AI analyzes the conversation — scorecards and Ask Siro aren't available until that finishes.

You don't need to refresh the recording page. Open the recording and leave it — the page checks for you and fills in the transcript, summary and tabs as soon as analysis finishes. While it's working you'll see Analyzing your recording in the middle of the page.

If it's still going after about ten minutes, the page switches to This is taking longer than expected and gives you a Refresh button you can use to check on demand.

Note (video recordings): the transcript and tabs deliberately appear before the video. Until the video file is ready you'll see Your video is being processed. where the player goes, and the player appears on its own — no reload needed.

Analysis can take up to an hour, especially for long recordings. If it's been more than an hour, contact Support.

For more on recording statuses, see My recording won't upload.

Only part of the conversation was captured

The recording ends where capture stopped, so a short recording usually points to one of the causes in During a Recording above — the tab was closed, the computer slept, the connection dropped past the retry window, or the mic disconnected with no fallback available. Note roughly when the audio cuts off; that timestamp helps Support pinpoint the cause.

Audio Problems

The recording is silent or very quiet

  • Confirm the correct input device is selected in Siro's mic selector and set as the active input in your computer's sound settings

  • Check that your mic isn't muted in Siro, on your headset's inline control, or in your operating system

  • Close other apps that may have claimed the microphone

  • Before your next call, run a short test recording and confirm the mic level dots move as you speak

Only your side of the conversation came through

A web recording captures what your microphone hears in the room. For in-person conversations, position your laptop or mic so it can pick up both speakers, and avoid a headset mic pointed only at you. For virtual meetings, the Siro Notetaker is the better tool — it joins the call directly and captures every participant.

Best Practices Recap

  • Set up once — run the setup test, allow microphone access, and pick your input device before your first call

  • Keep the Siro tab open for the whole conversation, and end with End recording → Save

  • Keep your computer awake and plugged in during long calls

  • Don't switch or unplug audio devices mid-recording

  • Quit other meeting apps so nothing else holds the microphone

  • Record in an updated Chrome, without ad blockers or privacy extensions interfering

  • Mute instead of ending if you need a break — there's no pause or resume on web
