Introducing the New Image Viewer: A More Seamless Way to Work with Images
Updated over a month ago

Meet the new and improved Image Viewer in Skand! We’ve reimagined it from the ground up to be more intuitive, flexible, and powerful—so you can work with your images and panoramas effortlessly. Let’s dive into what’s new!

A More Unified Experience

Remember having to jump between different places to control your images and panoramas? We've streamlined everything to make your workflow smoother:

  • All Your Controls in One Place: Image and panorama groups now live in the Layer tree alongside your other layers. No more switching between different controls – everything you need is right there in one unified interface.

  • Simplified Settings: We've moved the Image Viewer settings next to the 3D viewer settings, so you have one central place for all your viewing preferences.

  • Effortless View Switching: Navigate between 3D, panorama overlay, and image overlay views with just a click.

Three Powerful Viewing Modes for Every Need

The new Image Viewer introduces three distinct modes, each designed for specific scenarios:

2D Fullscreen Mode

Perfect for when you need to focus entirely on image details or work with images that don't have 3D positions yet.

3D Overlay Mode

Images can now be rendered directly on top of your 3D model, creating an immersive experience that combines the best of both worlds. The game-changer? Your annotations are automatically projected onto the 3D model as you draw them – no extra steps needed! Gone are the days of manually projecting annotations and waiting for camera movements.

Pop-out Mode

Want to compare multiple images or keep an eye on your 3D model while examining image details? Pop-out mode lets you open images in separate windows that you can arrange however you like. Compare details side by side or position images next to your 3D model for reference.

A Smarter Way to Work with Annotations

One of the biggest improvements is how annotations work in the new Image Viewer. Previously, projecting annotations from images to your 3D model was a multi-step process that required manual intervention and patience while the camera adjusted.

Now, with 3D Overlay mode, it's as simple as:

  1. Open your image in 3D Overlay mode

  2. Draw your annotations

  3. That's it! They're automatically projected onto your 3D model

This streamlined process isn't just faster – it helps you maintain better context and accuracy in your work since you can see exactly how your annotations align with the 3D model in real-time.

Color-Coded Image Groups

Ever wished you could tell your image groups apart at a glance? Now you can! We've added the ability to customize the color of camera indicators in the 3D viewer for different image groups. This is super helpful when you're working with multiple sets of images – maybe construction progress photos from different dates, or images from different areas of your project.

Here's how it works:

  • Each image group's cameras can now have its own distinct color

  • Makes it easy to identify which images belong to which group at a glance

Note: These color settings are saved locally on your device, giving you the freedom to set up your project just the way you like it. Just keep in mind that if you share your project with others, they'll need to set their own color preferences.

Fine-Tuning Image Alignment

Working in 3D Overlay mode and notice something's not quite right with how your image aligns with the 3D model? Sometimes the initial image pose or scaling might need a little adjustment to get that perfect alignment. Here's what you can do:

  1. If you notice any misalignment, look for the "Regenerate Pose" button

  2. Give it a click to recalculate the image's position and scale

  3. If things still aren't quite right after regeneration, don't hesitate to reach out to our support team – we're here to help!
