Create an IFC Layer

This article is included in the in-app onboarding series.

Updated this week

IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is an open and standardised file format used to represent building and infrastructure data across different software platforms. It plays a key role in Building Information Modelling (BIM), making it easier for teams to share and collaborate on project data without being locked into a specific application. By using IFC, you can maintain consistency, improve coordination, and ensure that key building elements and properties are carried over accurately throughout your workflow.

In SKAND, you can create an IFC layer to bring in model data and align it with your captured visuals. This helps enhance context, support visual inspections, and improve communication between teams. The steps below will guide you through creating an IFC layer within your project.

  1. To create a layer, make sure you are on the Project Dashboard. Then, click New Layer to begin.

  2. Input a layer name.

  3. Select the capture date.

  4. Choose IFC as layer type.

  5. Once done, click Next.

  6. Since the IFC is georeferenced, specify the EPSG code in the Spatial Reference Data dropdown.

Pro tip: If your data is not geo-referenced or using a local arbitrary coordinate system, you can select a custom location for your model.

  7. Once done, click Next.

  8. Select the IFC file by clicking the "+" button.

  9. Locate the IFC file and select.

  10. Once done, click Select.

  11. Review the file(s) before proceeding. If you need to make changes, you can click Previous Step at any time. Once everything is confirmed, click Done to complete the layer creation.

  12. You’ll be redirected back to the Project Dashboard. Once the layer is published, click View on Explore to visualise it.

  13. You can now view the IFC model.
