The ways that Student Welcome Groups will support incoming refugee students includes:

  • Meeting refugee students at the airport.

  • Take students to their university-provided accommodation and help them settle in.

  • Prepare the university-provided accommodation by providing linen as needed, personal hygiene products and a full fridge and other groceries.

  • Helping with registrations for essential services (Tax File Number, Centrelink entitlements, Medicare).

  • Assist students to set up bank accounts

  • Assist student to access local GP and other health care providers, as needed

  • Fundraising to support incoming students with on-arrival needs (we recommend a fundraising target of approximately $1k, but this is optional).

  • Linking students to key supports on campus (such as academic support, health, careers guidance) and in the community (such as specialist counselling services).

  • Introducing students to friends on campus and wider family/friend networks.

  • Connecting students to social and program-disciplinary networks, including clubs and societies on campus.

  • Helping students to find part time work (if/ when desired).

  • Introducing and connecting students to social and community networks including friends/family, local diaspora and faith networks (if / when desired)

  • Supporting students to move into longer-term accommodation and source suitable and good quality furniture, appliances and other basic household goods.
