Overview

There are several tools and features you can utilize during a virtual proctoring session.

In this article, you’ll learn:

  • How to view student feeds

  • How to use the magnify feature

  • What the call button does

  • What information the tabs provide

Viewing Student Feeds

Proctors can view a student’s camera and screen-share feeds, adjust or switch between available camera views, and resize or minimize feeds to focus on a single, larger view when needed.

Session feeds can be adjusted in both Overview Mode and Focus Mode:

Overview Mode

Focus Mode

Magnify Tool

The Magnify tool helps you zoom in on any part of a student's feed or ID pictures during check-in or monitoring, and appears automatically on the toolbar once at least one active student is present.

Magnify works across all available feeds (webcam, screen share, additional cameras) plus ID pictures, and can be used in Overview or Focus Mode.

To use the magnify tool, click on the icon to activate it.

Then hover your cursor over any area of a student’s screen to get a better view.

Navigating Session Tabs

The focus screen menu is organized into multiple tabs. Each tab contains different information or functions to support your proctoring workflow.

Session Info Tab

Displays key exam details:

  • Lockdown settings

  • Exam name, password, duration

  • Proctor notes

  • Permitted items

  • Student notes

Identification Tab

Stores ID photos and headshots when required by the institution.

Check-In Script Tab

Your customized Check-In script loads here. Follow the prompts to move a student through check-in.

  1. Approve and Deny buttons are always visible at the top right.

  2. Send to Step will be on the left where applicable

NOTE: Once check-in is complete, the Check-In Script tab will switch to show Flags that come up during the testing session.

Flags Tab

Once a student has completed onboarding, including check-in, SmarterProctoring begins automatically flagging behaviors that could warrant action by the proctor. The Flags tab within Focus Mode displays a running list of flags that can be reviewed and annotated.

Chat Tab

A visually separated chat window for messaging with the student.

When a student sends a message through chat, you will hear an alert sound as well as see a notification next to the students name.

If you send a message through the chat to a student, they will be notified within their testing window.

Call Tool

The call tool allows you to talk directly to the student, and the icon stays on your toolbar regardless of which tab you're viewing.

Green icon = call is active, and volume bars will move to show sound transmitting

White icon = call is inactive
