Automated Proctoring is a virtual exam monitoring tool that helps protect exam integrity while offering flexibility for test takers.

What Automated Proctoring Does

  • Records your screen and webcam during the exam.

  • Allows faculty to review flagged behaviors.

  • May ask you to scan your room before testing (if required by your institution).

What Automated Proctoring Does NOT Do

  • Monitor anything outside of your exam session.

  • Track network traffic or other devices.

  • Review your browsing history or installed programs.

  • Share information beyond your institution’s LMS.

  • Sell or share your data or recordings with outside entities.


Quick Start Guide

  1. Install or update Google Chrome

  2. Enable cookies

    • Go HERE and make sure cookies are allowed.

  3. Prepare your device

    • Use a laptop or desktop (Mac, Windows, or Chromebook only).

    • Phones and tablets are not supported except for use as a second camera (if enabled for the exam).

    • Make sure you have a working webcam and microphone.

    • Close all other programs to avoid slowing down your computer.

    • Keep your device charged during the exam.

  4. Log in through Chrome

    • Access SmarterProctoring from your course.

    • Follow prompts to install the Chrome Extension and accept terms.

  5. If assigned, complete the demo exam to test your setup.

  6. Before the exam

    • Complete onboarding.

    • Do not try to open the exam in a separate tab.

    • If the password does not auto-fill, use the Inject Password button or contact support via chat.

  7. During the exam

    • Do not cover your face or leave the view of the camera.

    • Move your mouse occasionally to prevent your computer from sleeping.

    • Adjust sleep settings if needed:

      • Windows: Settings > System > Power & Battery > Screen & Sleep

      • Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen


FAQ

How do I know when I’m being recorded?
A menu bar will appear on your screen once the session begins and your screen is being shared.

Can I remove the Chrome extension?
Yes. After your exam, right-click the extension icon in Chrome and select Remove from Chrome.
