Step-by-Step Guide to Claiming Other State Credit (OSC) for VA & HI Part-Year Residents
Use the + icon to add the Other State Tax Credit form for Virginia to the return.
Use the + icon to add the VA Schedule OSC (Out of State Credit) to the return. Note: The name of this form will vary by state.
Select the taxpayer’s residency status - in this case, part-year resident of VA and HI.
Enter the filing status code as listed on Line 1 and the identification number of the person claiming the credit as listed on Line 2 of the VA Sch OSC form.
To find the qualifying taxable income for Line 3, go to HI 15 Pg 3.
Copy the taxable income exactly as it appears on the other state’s tax return.
Navigate back to the VA Sch OSC.
Enter the taxable income from the other state on Line 3.
To find the qualifying tax liability owed to the other state for Line 5, navigate to HI 15 Pg 4.
Navigate back to the VA Sch OSC.
Copy the tax liability or tax owed from the other state’s tax return and enter it on Line 5 of the VA Sch OSC.
Enter the tax liability copied from the other state’s return of Line 5 of the VA Sch OSC.
Some states require a copy of the other state’s return to be filed with their own. To do this, enter the other state’s abbreviation on Line 6.
To attach the other state’s return, first “Print” the return and save it as PDF, then upload it.
After selecting the other state return documents, click Print.
Click OK.
Click Open PDF.
After saving the PDF of the other state’s return, click Close.
To attach the other state’s return, click the checkbox provided.
Click Select a File to Upload.
After selecting the saved PDF of the other state’s return, and uploading, click the X to close the window.
