The IRS has rejected the return because the 6-digit Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is either missing or incorrect.

Possible Causes:

  • The IP PIN was not entered for the taxpayer, spouse, or dependent.

  • The wrong IP PIN was used—these change annually and are issued by the IRS each year between late December and early January.

  • An old or expired IP PIN was used. Once a new PIN is issued, the previous one becomes obsolete.

✅ Steps to Resolve:

  1. Confirm if an IP PIN was issued – Ask the taxpayer, spouse, or dependent if they received an IP PIN for the current tax year.

  2. Retrieve the correct IP PIN:

    • Online: Taxpayers who registered online can retrieve their IP PIN at the IRS website starting early January.

    • By Mail: Taxpayers who registered via mail or in person will receive their IP PIN on Form CP01A (postcard-sized).

  3. Enter the correct IP PIN in the return.

  4. Resubmit the return after verifying the information.

🔎 Below are the most common IRS reject codes that occur when an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) is missing or incorrect on a tax return. To prevent these rejections, ensure that any taxpayer, spouse, or dependent listed on the return has provided their correct annual IP PIN.
