Specter Agent spends Specter API credits when it reads data for you. Every user gets a free allowance before that starts. This page covers what spends credits, what's free, and what happens when the allowance runs out.
What spends credits
Specter Agent opens far more records to answer a question than you'd open by hand. Those reads are what you pay for.
Reading a company, person or investor record costs credits, and so does a web search when Specter doesn't hold the answer. Specter Agent's own thinking adds a small amount on top, with a minimum of one credit per chat. Heavier questions cost more than light ones, because they read more.
What's free
Plenty of what Specter Agent does costs you nothing:
Finding a company, person or investor by name, domain or LinkedIn URL
Building a search, refining it, and reading the results
Creating, renaming and deleting Lists and Saved Searches
Running a skill, and searching this help centre
Any clarifying question Specter Agent asks you
Errors and retries never bill. If Specter Agent reads the same record twice in one answer, you're charged once.
Your free allowance
Every user gets a free allowance, and it refreshes on three windows at once:
Window | Free credits |
Per day | 250 |
Per week | 500 |
Per month | 1,000 |
The monthly window follows your team's billing period, so it resets with your billing date rather than on the 1st. This allowance is Specter Agent's own, and it's separate from your Specter MCP allowance.
When you run out
Past the allowance, Specter Agent draws on your team's API credit pool. One setting decides whether it can:
Setting | Past your free allowance |
On | Specter Agent carries on, billed to your team's API credit pool. |
Off | Specter Agent waits until your allowance resets. |
Turn it on with Use API credits for extra usage in your Specter settings. It's one setting for your whole team, it covers Specter Agent and the Specter MCP together, and only an admin can change it.
Note: there's nothing separate to buy. Specter Agent uses the same credit pool as the Specter API and the Specter MCP.
If an answer starts inside your allowance and crosses it partway through, Specter Agent finishes what it started.
You now know what spends credits and where your limits sit. Up next: Ask Specter Agent: prompts that work.
