Currencies & International Payments 🌍🐷

How currency works for supporters and creators, and what to know if you're earning or buying from abroad.

Written by 🐽 Support Piggy 🐽

Creators and supporters are all over the place. Here's how the money works across borders. 🌍

Supporters β€” see it in your currency πŸ’·

You can set a display currency, and prices are converted so you know roughly what you're paying before you pay it.

⚠️ Conversion is indicative. Your bank does the actual conversion at their rate on the day, so the final figure on your statement may differ slightly. Normal for any international purchase.

Creators β€” you always get your listed price βœ…

List at Β£100, receive Β£100. Every time, whatever currency the supporter paid in.

And when conversion lands in your favour β€” a payment comes in worth more than expected β€” we take less rather than passing it on. The maths always resolves in the creator's direction, never the other way. 🐷

What supporters pay from abroad 🌐

Alongside the normal fees:

πŸ’± Your bank's conversion rate, applied at their end
πŸ’³ Possibly a foreign transaction fee, depending on your card

Not our charges β€” they're between you and your bank. Worth knowing they exist so the statement isn't a surprise.

🏦 Pay by Bank avoids most of it where available β€” see below.

Where each method works 🌍

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Pay by Bank β€” UK, Finland, France, Germany
πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί SEPA Direct Debit β€” Eurozone
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ ACH β€” United States
πŸ’³ Card & wallets β€” everywhere else

⚠️ This matters at higher values. Above Β£1,000, Pay by Bank is the only option β€” so a supporter outside those regions can't complete a payment that large. Between Β£250 and Β£1,000, bank is recommended and card is allowed only if risk checks pass.

Creators selling high-value work internationally: check this before agreeing a big commission with someone abroad. See Payment Methods by Amount πŸ’³πŸ¦. 🌍

Why international cards get declined more ⚠️

International transaction blocks are the single most common decline we see. Most people don't know their bank has one switched on.

The fix is one phone call: "I'm making an online purchase and it's being declined."

Creators outside the UK 🏦

You can earn here from outside the UK, paid through Stripe Connect into your own bank account on the normal weekly cycle.

⚠️ Your tax obligations follow where you are, not where we are. You're the merchant of record β€” same principle everywhere, different rules in every country. Get local advice. See You're the Merchant πŸͺ🐷. πŸ’·

Common questions πŸ€”

"Why is the amount on my statement different from checkout?"
Your bank converted at their rate on the day. Our display figure is indicative.

"Can I list in a currency other than pounds?"
Listings are set in GBP. Supporters can view an approximate figure in their own currency.

"Do I lose money on conversion as a creator?"
No. You receive your listed price. Where conversion moves in your favour, we take less rather than adjusting your payout. βœ…

"Can I be paid to a non-UK bank account?"
Yes, through Stripe Connect, subject to Stripe supporting your country.

"Why can't I pay by bank in my country?"
Coverage is expanding. For now, card outside the listed regions. πŸ’³

"Are the fees different internationally?"
Our fees are the same. Your bank's conversion and any foreign transaction fee are theirs, not ours.

TL;DR 🎯

  1. Supporters can see prices in their own currency β€” indicative, your bank does the real conversion πŸ’±

  2. Creators always receive their listed price βœ…

  3. Bank rails cover UK, FI, FR, DE, the Eurozone and the US 🌍

  4. ⚠️ Above Β£1,000 is Pay by Bank only β€” check coverage before big international sales

  5. International card blocks are the most common decline. One call to the bank fixes it. πŸ“ž

Money crosses borders. Your listed price doesn't change. 🌍🐷
