How Can I Manage and Customize Contest Rules on Splash?

Understanding and managing contest rules is crucial for commissioners using Splash. Below, we outline key workflows, restrictions, and tips for effective rule management.

Overview of Contest Rules on Splash

Contest rules on Splash are automated by the platform but allow for certain customizations via contest settings or descriptions. Commissioners can modify settings for active contests, restart contests with prior rules, or use descriptions to add custom rules when limitations exist.

Adjusting Active Contests

To modify contest rules after setup:

  1. Go to the Commissioner tab.

  2. Under Active, select the contest you want to edit.

  3. Click Manage and navigate to the settings to update the rules.

For example, if you wish to adjust the 'entry lives' configuration—where 'entry lives 1' limits participants to a single life—you can change this setting to give participants two lives. This is updated directly in the contest settings.

Guidelines on Restarting Contests

When restarting a contest from a previous season:

  • All settings and rules from the prior contest will be carried over automatically.

  • However, new rules that were not previously available cannot be added within the restarted contest. Creating a new contest is required for adding such rules.

Note: Creating a new contest does not guarantee the inclusion of all previously available rules. Plan carefully before starting a new contest.

Publishing Custom Rules and Clarifications

Splash does not allow commissioners to edit built-in contest rules text, but you can publish custom or house rules in the Description field. These custom rules will appear at the top of the contest’s details page, above the automated rules. To add or edit custom rules:

  1. Go to Commissioner > Manage > Settings.

  2. Find the Description field below the contest name.

  3. Enter your custom rules text and save changes.

This is particularly useful for handling scenarios like ties. By default, ties in Splash contests are treated as losses, but you can clarify alternative tie-handling procedures in the description.

Restrictions on Customizing Rules

  • Changes to point values, especially in specialized contest formats like One and Done: Touchdowns, are not supported by Splash.

  • Modifications to platform-enforced rules need to be addressed creatively via descriptions as outlined above.

Related FAQs on Contest Rules

  • What does 'entry lives 1' mean?: This means each participant gets one life and is eliminated after the first loss. You can edit this setting as described earlier to grant two lives.

  • Can I add new rules to a restarted contest?: No, you’ll need to create a new contest to include rules not available in the prior configuration.

Summary

Commissioners on Splash have significant flexibility in managing contest rules but must work within platform restrictions. Use the steps outlined above to update settings, restart contests, or add custom clarifications in descriptions. Remember to plan carefully when introducing new rules or restarting existing contests for a seamless experience.
