Shooting stats: FG%, 3P%, FT%, eFG%, TS% and FTR

FG%, 3P%, FT%, eFG%, TS% and FTR, with the formulas.

📍 Where to find it: Open a game → Game Summary → Stats tab (Advanced toggle); or player/team page

These stats describe how well a player or team scores. The first three are simple make percentages; the rest are efficiency stats that appear when you flip the box score to Advanced. For all of them, higher is better.

The basic percentages

  • FG%, Field Goal %, the share of field goal attempts (twos and threes) that were made. Higher is better.

  • 3P%, 3-Point %, the share of 3-point attempts that were made. Higher is better.

  • FT%, Free Throw %, the share of free throws that were made. Higher is better.

The efficiency stats (Advanced)

  • eFG%, Effective Field Goal %, adjusts FG% to give extra credit for 3-pointers, since a three is worth more than a two. Formula: (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA. Higher is better.

  • TS%, True Shooting %, a single number for overall scoring efficiency that also accounts for free throws. Formula: PTS / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)). Higher is better.

  • FTR, Free Throw Rate, how often a player or team gets to the free-throw line relative to how much they shoot from the field. Formula: FTA / FGA. A higher FTR means more trips to the line.

eFG% vs TS% vs FG%, what's the difference?

  • FG% treats every made shot the same. A made three counts the same as a made layup, even though it's worth more.

  • eFG% fixes that by giving 3-pointers extra weight, so a good outside shooter looks more efficient than plain FG% suggests.

  • TS% goes one step further and folds in free throws, so it captures a player who scores efficiently at the line too. It's the most complete single-number measure of scoring efficiency.

In short: FG% for raw make rate, eFG% to reward threes, TS% for the full picture including free throws.

Why don't I see these?

The efficiency stats appear under the Advanced box score toggle. If you only see FG%, 3P% and FT%, switch the toggle to Advanced. See Reading your stats for the toggle.
