Uploading a subtitle file works inside an existing subtitle project. A subtitle project is created from an audio or video file, so you need that media file first — there is no way to start a project from a subtitle file on its own.

It can be viewed, edited, restyled, and exported in any of our subtitle formats.

It cannot be translated. Our translation runs on subtitles we generated from the audio, so a subtitle file you imported yourself cannot be sent for translation into another language.

If all you have is a subtitle file and what you want is that subtitle in another language, we cannot do that today. If you still have the original audio or video, create a subtitle project from it and add your translation languages there.

You can upload your own subtitle file into a subtitle project for further editing and export:

1. In the subtitle editor, click [Import] below the video

2. Upload your SRT / VTT subtitle file, select the subtitle language, then click [Confirm Import]

3. Once the subtitle file has been uploaded, open the source language list at the top of the subtitle panel, then select the new subtitles under [Local upload] to display and use them
