Uploading a subtitle file works inside an existing subtitle project. A subtitle project is created from an audio or video file, so you need that media file first — there is no way to start a project from a subtitle file on its own.

It can be viewed, edited, restyled, and exported in any of our subtitle formats.

It cannot be translated. Our translation runs on subtitles we generated from the audio, so a subtitle file you imported yourself cannot be sent for translation into another language.

If all you have is a subtitle file and what you want is that subtitle in another language, we cannot do that today. If you still have the original audio or video, create a subtitle project from it and add your translation languages there.

You can upload your own subtitle file into a subtitle project for further editing and export:

1. At the top of the subtitle editor, click the language list, then click [Upload subtitle file]

2. Upload your SRT / VTT subtitle file, select [Subtitle file], then click [Confirm upload]

3. Once the subtitle file has been uploaded, click the language list again and select the newly uploaded (locally imported) subtitles to display and use them
