Custom Groups for School Admins

Learn how School Admins can create and manage School Groups in TalkingPoints, add staff, and add students individually or by uploading a .csv file.

For: School Admins
Platform: TalkingPoint for Schools web application

School Groups let you organize existing students into custom groups that aren't synced from your student information system (SIS). Common examples include sports teams, clubs, bus routes, intervention groups, or students who were absent on a particular day.

✏️ Note: The screenshots in this article may look slightly different from what you see in TalkingPoints as we continue to improve the product.

Important: Students who were manually added to TalkingPoints—either individually or through the self-serve .csv Uploader—must also be added to School Groups manually.

If these students are included in a School Group .csv upload, the upload will fail and an error message will appear.

We're actively working to improve this experience.

Create a School Group

  1. Select Groups.

  2. Select Add Group.

  3. Enter a group name.

  4. Select Create.

Add Staff

  1. Select Add Staff.

  2. Select the staff members you'd like to add.

  3. Select Add Selected.

Add Students

There are two ways to add students to a School Group:

  • Upload a .csv file

  • Add students individually

Note: If your district has enabled student messaging, you'll also see options to invite confirmed students with a group code.

Option 1: Add via .csv

Students must already exist in TalkingPoints before they can be added to a School Group using a .csv upload.

Supported student sources include:

  • TalkingPoints Connector

  • Clever

  • ClassLink

  • Infinite Campus OneRoster

  • TalkingPoints self-serve .csv Uploader

Format Your .csv File

Create a spreadsheet with the following format - our template is linked here:

Column

Required Value

Column A header

sisId, studentid, or id (not case-sensitive; must be one word)

Remaining rows

One student ID per row

Important: Column A must include one of the supported headers. Without a header, TalkingPoints can't identify the student IDs.

Use the following student ID based on your rostering method:

Rostering Method

Student ID to Use

Clever

sisID

ClassLink

identifier

Infinite Campus OneRoster

identifier

TalkingPoints self-serve .csv Uploader

Student ID from the first column of the uploaded student list

Not sure which student ID to use?

Create the School Group, select Add Students Individually, then hover over a student's name to view their Student ID.

🍎Tip: We recommend including only the Student ID column in your .csv file. Additional columns won't be imported and may increase upload times.

Upload the .csv File

  1. Save your spreadsheet as a .csv file.

  2. Open the School Group and select Add Students.

  3. Drag and drop the file or browse your computer to upload it.

  4. Choose one of the following options:

    • Replace the current group members with the students in your .csv file.

    • Add the students in your .csv file to the existing group.

  5. Select Add.

Note: After the upload completes, TalkingPoints displays the number of students that couldn't be added.

This usually happens because:

  • the student was manually added and doesn't have a Student ID, or

  • the Student ID in the .csv file doesn't match a student in TalkingPoints.

Option 2: Add Students Individually

  1. Open the School Group and select Add Students.

  2. Select Add Students Individually.

  3. Select the students you'd like to add.

  4. Select Add Selected.
