Turn off Class and Group Visibility for Family App Contacts

Turn off class and group visibility and turn it back on again for district admins.

Updated over a week ago

📌 Who can do this?
Only users with District Admin permissions can turn off class and group visibility for families.

🤔 Why turn off visibility?

During transitions (like back-to-school or mid-year schedule changes), families may see class schedules before they’re final. This setting gives you control over what’s visible in the TalkingPoints for Families app, while keeping your data synced and teachers connected.

✅ Hides classes and groups from families
✅ Prevents families from messaging teachers
✅ Allows teachers and school staff to still message families
✅ Doesn’t delete or block data syncing

❌ When visibility is turned off, families cannot view class schedules or start messages with teachers from the app.

✅ However, teachers and school staff can still message families.

✅ Additionally, families can reply to received messages without seeing the specifics of a school or district's information.

🚫 What happens when visibility is OFF?

When visibility is turned off:

  1. Families can’t start messages with teachers or view class schedules from the app’s Settings tab.

  2. Teachers can still message families

  3. Families can still message school staff, including:

    • Teachers or non-rostered staff (NRS) who hold grade-level classes

    • School Admins or staff with Personal or Attendance messaging access:

      • 🟣 Purple Attendance icon = can send Attendance messages

      • 🔵 Blue school icon = can send Personal messages

  4. Families can still message School Admins directly.
