Am I entitled to breaks during my shift?

Yes, breaks are provided based on shift length

Written by Temper | Work to Live

Yes, you are entitled to breaks during your shift. The Working Hours Act defines your break entitlements:

  • Shifts longer than 5.5 hours: You get a 30-minute break.

  • Shifts longer than 10 hours: You get a 45-minute break.

Additionally, the collective labour agreement (CAO) may have extra rules or regulations regarding breaks. Breaks can also be taken in several 15-minute blocks. The hiring company might have set break times though.

It is up to the company if they want to pay out your break time or have it unpaid.
