Configure tip percentages and amounts on the POS, online ordering, receipts, and handhelds. Per-device settings supported for international

Applies to: Toast POS, Toast Online Ordering, Toast Go® handheld, Toast Flex terminal, S1 Handheld, Toast Kiosk. Available in all markets including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the UK.

What you'll accomplish: Tip amount and percentage options will appear on your selected guest payment surfaces — POS, online ordering, digital receipts, and Guest-Facing Display — and you'll be able to change which amounts are suggested.

  • Note: The tip options you select in Toast Web apply everywhere tipping is enabled, including digital receipts, printed receipts, and Toast Online Ordering. Tip settings cannot be configured differently per channel from Toast Web alone — see Disable Tips at Your Restaurant for per-channel disable options.

Set Up Tip Options in Toast Web

Follow these steps to enable tipping and change the suggested tip percentages or amounts your guests see at checkout.

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Front of house > Order screen setup > UI options.

  2. Scroll to the Tipping section and find the Customize Tip Percentages setting.

  3. Select whether tip options appear to guests as percentages, currency amounts, or both.

  4. Enter the suggested tip percentages or amounts you want guests to see. Tip settings apply anywhere tipping is enabled, including digital receipts, physical receipts, and Toast Online Ordering.

  5. Select Save and then Publish to apply your changes.

Expected outcome: Your updated tip percentages or amounts appear at guest checkout on the POS, on digital and printed receipts, and on Toast Online Ordering. Changes may take up to a few minutes to sync to handheld devices and the Guest-Facing Display.

Important: Tip percentage suggestions cannot be removed from the signature screen without fully disabling tipping. Only the percentage value can be modified.

Display Four Tip Amounts on Online Ordering (U.S. Only)

This section is not applicable to customers in Australia, Canada, Ireland, or the UK

By default, the UI options page lets you edit three tip percentages, but Toast Online Ordering displays four suggested tip amounts. Use the procedure below to edit the fourth tip amount or to remove it so only three appear online.

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Finance > Related > Settings > Payment options.

  2. Scroll to the Digital Receipt Options section. For the Tip & Signature Flow setting, select Use the legacy Tip screen along with the legacy signature screen.

  3. Select Save.

  4. Navigate to Front of house > Order screen setup > UI options and scroll to the Tipping section.

  5. Edit the fourth tip amount as needed. To show only three tip amounts on Toast Online Ordering, set the fourth amount to "0" — the 0 value will not appear to guests.

  6. Select Save and then Publish.

  7. Return to Finance > Related > Settings > Payment options. Change the Tip & Signature Flow setting back to Use the combined Tip & Signature Screen.

  8. Select Save and then Publish.

Expected outcome: Toast Online Ordering displays the three or four tip amounts you configured. Your in-restaurant Tip & Signature screen returns to the combined layout.

Manage Tip Settings per Device (Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK)

This section is not applicable to customers in the U.S.

If your restaurant requires different tip configurations per card reader — for example, a combination of percentage prompts on one handheld and a tip line on another — you can disable Toast's standard tipping flow on the device and request a custom configuration from Toast Customer Care.

  1. On the S1 Handheld or Toast Flex terminal, navigate to Device Setup.

  2. Disable the Use Toast Tips option. See Disable Tips at Your Restaurant for the full disable steps.

  3. Contact Toast Customer Care to request a custom payment processor configuration. International phone numbers and chat options are listed under Before You Contact Customer Care.

Expected outcome: Your card reader uses the custom tipping flow configured by Customer Care instead of Toast's standard percentage prompts.

Fix Tip Options Not Showing on a New Device

If a new POS device, handheld, or terminal is not displaying tip options that you have already enabled in Toast Web, the device may be mirroring its settings from another device that has tipping disabled. Turn off forced mirroring on the original device to fix this.

  1. On the original device (the device the new one was mirrored from), navigate to Setup > Device Setup.

  2. Disable the Force mirroring on device on the second screen option.

  3. Restart the new device to refresh its settings.

Expected outcome: The new device pulls its own settings from Toast Web and displays the tip options you configured.

Can I set tip options as both a percentage and a dollar amount?

Yes. You can set tip options as percentages, currency amounts, or both. Open Front of house > Order screen setup > UI options in Toast Web and configure the Customize Tip Percentages setting to your preferred display format. The format applies to all surfaces where tipping is enabled.

Can I remove the suggested tip percentages on the signature screen?

Tip percentage suggestions cannot be removed from the signature screen without fully disabling tipping. You can change the percentage values, but the suggestion area itself remains on the signature screen as long as tipping is enabled. To disable tipping entirely, see Disable Tips at Your Restaurant.

If your tip amounts are not matching across the POS, receipts, online ordering, or the Guest-Facing Display after a change in Toast Web, the tip suggestions may not have been refreshed. Most tip configuration changes are self-service from Toast Web. Contact Customer Care if you've already saved and published your changes and your devices are not reflecting the new settings after a full sync, or if you need a custom per-device tip configuration that Toast Web does not support (Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK only).

Before contacting Customer Care, confirm the following so the agent can resolve your case faster:

  • You have saved and published your changes in Toast Web.

  • You have waited a few minutes for changes to sync to handheld devices and the Guest-Facing Display.

  • You have followed the steps in Suggested Tip Amount Does Not Match if the sync issue persists.

  • For international per-device configuration: you have already disabled the Use Toast Tips option on the device.
