Kitchen Display System (KDS) New Grid View Overview
New Grid View is not compatible with Elo v1. It is compatible with portrait orientation for Elo v2 and Elo v4 devices. |
Previously known as Grid View, Toast's New Grid View for Kitchen Display System (KDS) is powered by a back-end architecture that enables greater functionality on the KDS to support advanced UI and workflows for restaurants that are looking to streamline their kitchen operations and improve the speed of service.
New Grid View includes the following features:
Grid View: A KDS ticket layout that displays tickets on a fixed grid. This provides a grid layout for kitchen tickets with a maximum number of tickets on a screen.
Pagination: Indicates how many pages of tickets exist and can be tapped to move to a specific page quickly.
Payment status: Displays whether the order was paid or unpaid.
Preview tickets: Also known as "fire on next", see items as they are being inputted on the POS before the order is complete so the kitchen can start preparation even sooner (Enable Preview Tickets on KDS Device).
Dark Mode: Minimize brightness of the KDS screen at bars and reduce eye strain.
Runner fulfillment: An additional level of item fulfillment at Expeditor to track individual item status (Food Runner Fulfillment on KDS).
Partial fulfillment indicator: An orange check mark that indicates when an item has been started or when an item that is routed to multiple prep stations is fulfilled by one prep station.
Assembly lines: The ability to sequence tickets from one prep stations to another (Use Assembly Lines With KDS).
Bump bars: Use a bump bar with your KDS to make it easy to fulfill tickets when the KDS device is far away (Use a Bump Bar With Toast KDS).

Enable KDS New Grid View
As the foundation for all new KDS features, New Grid View is the default KDS view for all new customers.
To enable the New Grid View, follow these steps:
From your POS main screen, navigate to Setup > Device Setup.
Under Device Setup, change the KDS View setting to New Grid View.
Change Your Ticket Size
After New Grid view is enabled, you'll be defaulted to Dynamic Sizing as the ticket size. You can always change the size using the Change Ticket Size setting within the overflow menu (three vertical dots) in the top right corner of your KDS. There are four ticket size settings to choose from:
Dynamic Sizing: Dynamically sized tickets that go beyond the 10-ticket limit, based on how many items are included on the ticket. This will display a maximum of 20 to 30 tickets depending on your device and settings.
If you're opting to use the dynamic sizing option and you're using a bump bar with your Toast KDS, the first 10 tickets will have the overlay for order fulfillment via the 1-10 numbered buttons on the bump bar. Learn more about using bump bars with your Toast KDS here: Using the bump bar - Toast Platform Guide.
Small Tickets: A 5x2 ticket grid with a maximum of ten tickets per page.
Medium Tickets: A 4x2 grid with a maximum of eight tickets per page.
Large Tickets: A 3x2 ticket grid with a maximum of six tickets per page.
Navigate to the Kitchen Display System section on your POS.
Select the overflow menu (the ⋮ icon) found at the top right corner of your device screen.
Then select Change ticket size.
Choose your desired ticket size (Dynamic Sizing, Small Tickets, Medium Tickets, or Large Tickets).
Select Confirm. The KDS device using grid view now displays the chosen ticket size.
Note: If you need to customize items/modifier colors of your KDS tickets, please read this article: Customize the Appearance of KDS Tickets. Changing text size independently of ticket size is currently unavailable.
