How can I create a 3 player team tournament when playing as sixsomes?

Updated over 4 months ago

Q: We are running a 3 player team stroke play event using sixsomes. How can I create a 3 player team tournament when playing as sixsomes?

A: Depending on the format of the tournament, you have a couple of options:

  • Create a "Player" for every team: If you are running a format where you do not need team Playing Handicaps calculated and are only using one score per team, you can create a "Player" for each team.

  • Separate each 3 Person team into separate pairing groups: If you are running a stroke play/Stableford/quota/skins format where you need to calculate team Playing Handicaps, separate each 3-person team into their own pairing group.

  • Create 3 Person teams and use Triples v. Triples or Team v. Team (1&2&3 v 4&5&6) Competition: If you are running a match format where you need to calculate team Playing Handicaps, create 3-person teams and use the Triples v. Triples competition.

In this article, we will discuss the two options for setting up 3 player teams when playing as sixsomes.

Option 1 - Create a player for every team:

Instead of adding players to the event roster, add "teams" to the event roster and create "twosomes" in the pairings. The disadvantage is that player names will not be entered, handicaps cannot be calculated, and you will not have detailed reports like alpha lists and cart signs. To do this:

  1. Go to Golfers > Manually Add Players to Roster.

  2. Enter the team names as the last name. Keep in mind that space is limited on the scorecards and other reporting, so the names may get cut off if they are long. Save the roster once every team is added.

  3. Go to Rounds > Round Profile > Tournaments and Scheduling > Pairings Size and set the pairings size to "Twosomes."

  4. Go to Rounds > Create New Pairings > Automatic Scheduling > Randomly > Next > Continue.

  5. Swap the teams into "twosomes" or add new rows if necessary and move the teams to the empty rows (as shown below).

  6. Set the course/tee, tee times, and starting holes. Save the pairings.

  7. Set up the tournament(s). Go to Rounds > Tournaments > Add New Tournament. Select "player v. field" as the competition. Save the tournament.

  8. If the tournament is net, go to Rounds > Handicap Analysis. Click on a team and select "Adjust Course Handicap." Enter the team Playing Handicap. Repeat this step for all remaining teams.

  9. Print your material. Scorecards will print with the team name on the player line. Cart signs will be printed with the team name as well.

Option 2 - Separate each 3-person team into separate pairing groups:

If you play a format where everyone plays their own ball (stroke/stableford/quota/skins), we suggest separating each team of 3 into their own pairing group. To do this:

  1. Create 3 player Teams. For more details on creating teams, Click Here.

  2. Go to Rounds > Create New Pairings > Automatic Scheduling > Team(1 Team / Pairing Group) > Select the team list > Next > Continue.

  3. Swap the pairings if needed. Each sixsome should be separated into two separate pairing groups. Below is a tee sheet with sixsomes (each sixsome is circled).

  4. Set the starting hole/times. Depending on if it is a shotgun or tee time, following these examples:

    1. For shotguns, click "Set Shotgun" and "Select All" and put two teams on each hole (as shown below).

    2. For tee times, click "Set Tee Time" and "Select All." Set the first tee time and set the interval to "0, X," the "x" is your interval times. So if you run 10-minute intervals, set it to "0, 10" (as shown below).

  5. Click "Go."

  6. Once the starting time/holes are set, and the course is assigned, save the pairings.

  7. Set up the tournament(s).

    1. Single Round Event: Go to Rounds > Tournaments > Add New Tournament. Select the team list that was created in the previous and set the competition to "Team(foursome) vs. field/flight" as the competition (as shown below).

    2. Multi-round single format event: Go to Event/League > Multi-Round Tournaments > Add New Multi-Round Tournament. Select the rounds, select the team list that was created in the previous and set the competition to "Team(foursome) vs. field/flight" as the competition.

  8. Print your material. Each team will have its own scorecards. Print your cart signs, tee sheets, and alpha lists as you usually do.

Option 3 - Create 3 Person teams and use Triples v. Triples or Team v. Team (1&2&3 v 4&5&6) Competition:

If you play a team head-to-head match format where you need to calculate team Playing Handicaps (for example, a 6 team round-robin), we suggest creating teams, setting the pairing size to sixsome, creating round tournament using the Triples v. Triples or Team v. Team (1&2&3 v 4&5&6) Competition, and linking the tournament at the round level for a one round event or at the event/league level for multi-round single format event. To do this:

  1. Create 3 player Teams. For more details on creating teams, Click Here.

  2. Creating Pairings:

    1. Manually: Go to Rounds > Create New Pairings > Manual Pairings > Create Manual Foursomes by Other Teams > Select the team list > Select all players from two team > Click Create Pairings > Continue to create all matches > Next > Create Pairings.

    2. Round Robin Scheduler: Create pairings using the round robin scheduler by going to Event/League > Round Robin Schedule. For more details on creating round robin schedules, Click Here.

  3. Edit the pairings by set the starting hole/times. For more details about editing your existing pairings, Click Here.

  4. Once the starting time/holes are set, and the course is assigned, save the pairings.

  5. Set up the tournament(s). Go to Rounds > Tournaments > Add New Tournament. Select the team list that was created in the previous steps, set the format, and set the competition to "Triples v. Triples or Team v. Team (1&2&3 v 4&5&6)" as the competition (as shown below).

  6. Save the Tournament to "My Tournament Library" and "Auto-Include in all further rounds" for a multi-round event (i.e., round robin).

  7. Link the tournament.

    1. One-Round Event (Single Format): If this is a one-round stroke/stableford/quota event, you can link the tournament to get results for the field. Go to Round > Tournaments > Add Linked Tournament. Name the tournament and select the round tournament, use advanced settings to create a payout and click "Save." For complete details on linked tournaments, Click Here. (Note: This will not work for a flighted event. Use option two for flighted events).

    2. Multi-Round Event (Single Format): If this is a multi-round (single format) match/stroke/stableford/quota event, you can link the tournament to get results for the field. Go to Event/League > Multi-Round Tournaments > Add Linked Tournament. Name the tournament and select the round tournaments, use advanced settings to create a payout and click "Save." For complete details on linked tournaments, Click Here. (Note: This will not work for a multi-round multi-format event. Use option two and then link the round tournaments).

  8. Print your material. Each team will have its own scorecards. Print your cart signs, tee sheets, and alpha lists as you usually do.
