In some Stroke Play and Stableford tournaments, there is a cut that needs to be made on the leaderboard. The main purpose of a cut is to highlight the players who made the cut and the players who did not make the cut. For example, think of an 18-hole local Stroke Play qualifier where only the top 13 players qualify for the sectional qualifier. If you also have alternates for the qualifier, you can use section lines to display those alternates. Click Here for details on using section lines in conjunction with cut lines.
Cut lines can also be used in multi-round tournaments. Along with highlighting the cut players on the leaderboard, pairings can also be created for a subsequent round using the current scores and the cut. Think of a 54-hole Stroke Play event where there is a cut after 36-holes. The final 18-hole pairings are then determined by the first 36-hole scores and the cut. Players who did not make the cut, do not play in the final round.
In this article, we will discuss how to set up cut lines, resolve ties, and creating pairings using the cut line.
Setting Up a Cut Line:
To create a cut line for a single round tournament (think of the local qualifier example above), go to Rounds > Tournaments > New Tournament.
To instead create a cut line for a multi-round tournament where the cut determines subsequent round pairings (think of the 54-hole Stroke Play example above), go to Event > Multi-Round Tournaments > Add New Multi-Round Tournament. Set up the tournament format then select the Advanced Options for Cut Lines & Sections (as shown below).
You will then be able to set up the cut line parameters (as shown below).
The following options will be made available:
Make Cut after Round (Multi-Round Tournaments Only): Select when the cut should be made during the tournament. Remember that you will not see this option if setting up a single round tournament.
Cut Line Label: Enter the text that should be displayed between the cut and non-cut players on the leaderboard (as shown below).
By default, we say "The following players did not make the cut". Also note that, while the round is in progress", we always display "Projected Cut."
The following players will make the cut: What players make the cut? The low 13 players plus the ties? Or do we need to take exactly 13 players. If the latter, ties will need to be resolved, which we will discuss later in this article. Another option would be to set the cut at a certain score. For instance, maybe any player that finished +10 over par or better makes the cut. If you have pros and amateurs in the field, then you can also set the cut so that a certain number of pros must make the cut. When doing so, Those pros (plus the amateurs who sit above the adjusted cut line) will make the cut.
While the tournament is in progress: Select when the projected cut line be displayed during the tournament. Would you like full control of manually displaying/hiding it? If so, select the first option.
You can then Hide or Show the Cut Line by going to Rounds > Display Leaderboard (as shown below).
You can also automatically set the cut line to be displayed when at certain percentage of scores have been entered for all of the holes. Say for instance that all players start on hole #1 and we require 25% of the scores to be entered. Once 25% of the field completes hole #18, the projected cut line will automatically display. And finally, if you do not want a projected cut line displayed at any time, select the last option. The final cut line will not be displayed until the round is complete.Cut Line Projection Method: If you are enabling a projected cut line, there are two methods of computing the live projected cut line:
Use Hole Averages of Unplayed Holes: As players scores are being entered, we compute the average score for each hole being played and use those average scores to project the score for players who have not completed those holes yet.
If you look above, notice there are some players who have not finished holes 15, 16, 17, and 18 yet. We will use the Field Average scores to compute a final projected score for all of those players who have not yet finished. (Note: These stats can be found by going to Rounds > Display Leaderboard > Expand All).Use Current To Par Score as Projected Score: The second option is a simpler option. Instead of projecting unplayed hole-by-hole scores, we assume that players who have not yet finished the round will maintain their "To Par" status. For instance, if a player is +3 after 11 holes, we assume they will finish the round at +3.
Purse Payout (Multi-Round Tournament Only) (Association Only): Award any players that missed the cut a purse amount designed here.
Once the parameters are set, save the cut line settings as well as the tournament.
Resolving Ties and Manually Adjusting Cut Players:
If exactly 20 players can make the cut, and there are ties that need to be broken to get exactly 20 players, then you will need to resolve the ties. This happens often in Stroke Play qualifiers, where playoff holes are used to break the ties. To resolve ties, follow these instructions:
Once all the scores are entered for the round, move the Round Status to Completed under the Rounds Menu.
Go to Rounds > Display Leaderboard.
Click "Resolve Ties" on the cut line.
Select "Did Not Make Cut" or "Made Cut" to move the players above or below the cut line.
To assign alternates (if necessary), select "Details" for the player and enter their alternate status. They will be sorted and listed properly..
Once the cut line changes are made, click "Done Adjusting".
The cut will then be set.
Look at the sequence below. Only 10 players can make this cut and currently 11 sit above the cut line. Sirois is moved below the cut line to give us exactly 10 players.
The sequence below shows the process of assigning Rosenberg as "1st Alternate" and Betsey as "2nd Alternate".
Hiding Player that Didn't Make the Cut:
After you have your tournament results and you wish to hide the players that didn't make the cut, you can use the "Display" setting (as shown below) under Advanced Options for your tournament to only show the number of players that made the cut.
In the display setting, you can define how many places should be displayed on the leaderboard (as shown below). Set the number to show only the place (plus ties) that made the cut.
Creating Pairings using the Cut Line:
For multi-round tournaments, cut players typically do not continue onto subsequent rounds. The remaining players are also usually organized by score (e.g., leaders off last). To create pairings for a round using the results and the cut line, go to the Rounds Menu for the next round > Create New Pairings > Pair by Previous Results or Pairings.
