Applying Maximum Hole-by-Hole Scores

Updated over 2 months ago

When setting up a stroke play tournament, you can apply maximum hole-by-hole scores for the competition. This allows players who may have had a couple of bad holes to stay in the competition. It also improves the pace of play.

Keep in mind that the maximum score rules applied to a tournament will not affect maximum score applications when posting scores to your handicap service provider.

Setting Up Maximum Score Rule:

To apply maximum score rules to a tournament, go to the "Maximum Scores" section of the tournament setup (as shown below).

The following options are available:

  • Do not apply hole-by-hole maximum scores: No maximum scores applied. This is the default selection.

  • Apply maximum hole-by-hole score of net/gross double bogey: The maximum score for a hole will be a net double bogey (if playing a net tournament) or gross double bogey (if playing a gross tournament). This option is suggested by the World Handicap System. When using this option, two additional selections are available (Note: To have these two additional options enabled, please contact the support team.):

    • Score as NS when either no scores or only X scores are entered: If this option is selected, golfers who have no scores or only X scores entered on the score entry page will not have maximum scores applied, and they will be marked as NS on the leaderboard.

    • Apply maximum scores when either no scores or only X scores are entered: When this option is selected, golfers that have holes with no score or X scores entered on the score entry page will automatically be filled in with the maximum score. The maximum score will be displayed on the Leaderboard, and the golfer will not be marked as NS on the leaderboard.

(Note: If playing a Gross/Net Bias format and advanced maximum scores are used, the rules will be applied to both gross and net results. If you do not want the advanced maximum scores applied to both the gross and net, set up linked tournaments using the "Keep Best Result of Selected Tournaments (Gross/Net)" linking method. For details on setting up linked tournaments, Click Here.)

  • Advanced hole-by-hole maximum scores: Create customized maximum score rules for specific holes. When using this option, two additional selections are available:

    • Score as NS when either no scores or only X scores are entered: If this option is selected, golfers who have no scores or only X scores entered will not have maximum scores applied, and they will be marked as NS on the leaderboard.

    • Apply maximum scores when either no scores or only X scores are entered: When this option is selected, golfers that have holes with no score or X scores will automatically be filled in with the maximum score. The maximum score will be displayed on the Leaderboard, and the golfer will not be marked as NS on the leaderboard.

When selecting the advanced method, click "Add Rule" to apply a customized maximum score rule. Select or enter the following:

    • Enter the rule description (e.g., Par 3 maximum, etc)

    • Holes: Select the holes to apply the rule.

    • Apply Maximum To: Apply the maximum to the gross or net score. This option will only be available if setting up a net tournament.

    • Max Score: Select from the two available options:

      • Fixed: Enter the maximum score that will be applied to all of the selected holes regardless of par.

      • In Relation to Par: Select the maximum score to be Par, Bogey, Double Bogey, Triple Bogey, Two Times Par (e.g., Par 4 = maximum score of 8), or Advanced. When selecting advanced, the maximum score can be computed by multiplying par by a certain number, then adding any additional strokes. (Example: Maximum Score = 2 x Par +2. In the case of a par 4, the maximum score would be 10).

After entering the rule parameters, click "Save Rule". Apply maximum score rules to any remaining holes (if necessary). You can always delete or edit rules (as shown below).

Entering Scores:

When entering scores, the score preview will apply the maximum score rules. For instance, in the example below, Beth scored a 10 on hole #1, but after applying the maximum score rule (net double bogey), the preview shows the adjusted score of a 6.

When the tournament is live and "In Progress", maximum scores will be applied to holes where scores were entered and holes that were not finished (X was entered). Maximum scores will not yet be applied to holes with no scores.

When the tournament is finalized and completed, maximum scores will then be applied to holes with no scores.
