Renewing an Expired SharePoint Connection

How to generate a new client secret and reconnect your SharePoint integration

Overview

Your SharePoint integration authenticates using a client secret you generated when you first connected, with an expiration you set at that time (commonly 6, 9, or 12 months). Once that secret expires, Trunk Tools can no longer authenticate to your SharePoint site, and the integration stops pulling new or updated files — you may notice missing folders, stale documents, or sync errors during this window. There's no way to extend or revive an expired secret; you'll need to generate a new one, which this guide walks you through.

Who Can Do This

  • ✅ Business Admin — can set up and manage integrations across the business.

  • ✅ Project Manager — can manage integrations within their assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Admin access to your organization's Azure App Registration for the Trunk Tools integration

  • A way to securely share credentials with Trunk Tools (if using Option 1)

Step 1: Generate a new client secret

Generate a new client secret in your Azure App Registration for the Trunk Tools integration.

  • Go to the Azure Portal, sign in as an admin and open App Registrations

  • Select the existing app used for the Trunk Tools integration (don't create a new one unless you're intentionally switching tenants)

  • In the left menu, select Certificates & secrets then click New client secret

  • Enter a name (e.g., "Trunk Tools Integration") and choose an expiration, 12+ months is recommended to avoid lapses in data sync

  • Once created, copy the Value from the table immediately — it's only shown once

  • Go to the Overview page and note the Tenant ID and Client ID as well

Confirm you have all three (Client ID, Secret Value, Tenant ID) before moving on.

Step 2: Reconnect

Choose one of the two options below:

Option 1: Share the new credentials with Trunk Tools

Send your new client ID and secret (and tenant ID, if changed) to your Trunk Tools Technical Account Manager through a secure channel.

We'll update the connection on our end — typically within a couple of minutes of receiving them.

Option 2: Reconnect yourself

If you'd rather not share credentials directly, you can re-authenticate through the Trunk Tools UI:

  • Navigate to Trunktext.com and sign in

  • Click the project name in the top-left corner and select the project you want to integrate

  • Select Integrations on your left navigation bar

  • Click Reconnect Required

  • Enter your Directory (tenant) ID new Client Secret Value, then click Connect

  • Close the window — you don't need to click through any further setup steps. Your existing hostname, path, drive selection and folder selection all stay intact

Note: If you have multiple connected projects, repeat these steps for each one, even if they share the same credentials

Next steps

Once your credentials are updated, the integration will resume syncing automatically

FAQs

Can I extend my expired secret instead of creating a new one?
No — expired secrets can't be extended or revived. You'll need to generate a new one in Azure.

Will I lose my folder or drive selections when I reconnect?
No. Your hostname, path, drive selection, and folder selection all stay intact through the reconnect process.

What if I still see sync issues after reconnecting?
Reach out to your Technical Account Manager and we'll take a closer look.
