Asking Your First Question in Trunk Tools

A beginner walk-through of asking your first question and reading the cited answer.

Asking Your First Question in Trunk Tools

Trunk Tools answers questions about your project by reading the documents behind it. This guide shows what a good first question looks like and how to trust the answer you get back.

Who Can Do This

  • ✅ All roles — you can ask questions across the documents in any project you've been given access to.

How to Ask Your First Question

Step 1: Open Your Project

Sign in and select the project you want to ask about. Everything you ask is scoped to that project's documents. See Switching Between Projects in Trunk Tools.

Step 2: Ask in Plain Language

Type your question the way you'd ask a knowledgeable teammate — you don't need to know which file holds the answer. For example: "What is the fire rating for the corridor walls on Level 3?" or "Which submittals are still open for the mechanical scope?"

Step 3: Review the Cited Answer

Trunk Tools replies with an answer plus links to the documents it came from. Open the sources to verify the answer before you act on it.

Tips for a Good First Question

  • Be specific — include the level, area, system, or spec section when you know it.

  • Ask one thing at a time — start a new conversation when you switch topics.

  • Use filters if the project has a lot of documents, to point Trunk Tools at the right set.

Note: You can also ask questions by text message or in Microsoft Teams. See What is TrunkText?
