Searching for and Finding Documents in Trunk Tools

How to ask questions, search your project documents, and use filters to find exactly what you need — with cited sources.

Searching for and Finding Documents in Trunk Tools

This article shows how to find information across your project documents in Trunk Tools — by asking a question in plain language or by filtering to a specific document type — and how to trust what comes back.

Because Trunk Tools reads your full document set as a connected system, you can ask for an answer instead of opening file after file to look for it.

Who Can Do This

  • ✅ All roles — you can search and ask questions across the documents in any project you've been given access to.

How to Ask a Question

Step 1: Ask in Plain Language

Type your question the way you'd ask a knowledgeable teammate — for example, "Which submittals are still open for the mechanical scope?" You don't need to know which file the answer lives in.

Step 2: Review the Cited Answer

Trunk Tools returns an answer along with links to the documents it came from. Open the sources to verify the answer before you act on it.

Note: You can also ask questions by text message or in Microsoft Teams. See What is TrunkText?

How to Narrow Your Search with Filters

On projects with a lot of documents, filters point Trunk Tools at exactly the set you care about.

Step 1: Open the Filter Options

Open the filter panel and choose what to narrow by.

Step 2: Choose Your Filters

Available filters include:

  • Document Type — Specs, RFIs, Submittals, Drawings, Daily Logs, and Folders.

  • Project Source — if enabled for your project.

You can also filter by searching a specific file name or keyword.

Step 3: Apply or Save Your Filters

  • Click Apply to use a filter for the current search only.

  • Click Save & Apply to reuse it later — saved filters appear in the drop-down at the top of the filter window.
