How to Charge Shipping Upfront on TryNow Orders
Updated over a week ago

Overview

To ensure some upfront financial commitment from shoppers, you can implement a feature that charges for shipping in checkout. This allows you to offer marketing messages like: "Try at home for free, just pay $5 for shipping."

Note: This will impact your conversion rate, since the shopper will no longer see a $0 cart.

Below is what the shopper experience looks like:

This feature auto-adds the Try Before You Buy free SKU to any TryNow cart. This causes Shopify to treat this as a mixed cart order (1 buy now item, the Try Before You Buy SKU, and 1 TryNow item), which pushes the shipping to be charged upfront.

Setup Instructions

First, make sure that your Enable Try Before You Buy app embed block is toggled on! This feature requires the app embed block to be on.

Step 1: Create the "Try Before You Buy" SKU:

  1. In your Shopify store, create this new product.

  2. Set the price to be $0.

  3. Disable inventory tracking or ensure sufficient inventory is available.

Step 2: Configure the Feature in Merchant Portal:

  1. In Merchant Portal, navigate to your Payment Capture settings.

  2. Locate the Trial Deposit/Fee setting.

  3. Click "Configure."

  4. Search for and select the SKU you created in Step 1.

  5. Save the configuration to enable this feature for your store.

Step 3: Test the functionality:

  1. On your storefront, add a TryNow item to your cart.

  2. Either go to checkout, click to another page, or refresh the page. Check that the Try Before You Buy SKU has automatically been added.

  3. In checkout, ensure that your shipping is charged upfront.
