Creating a Dependent Picklist
Updated over a week ago

Step 1: Go to the Object Manager

1. Go to Setup.

2. Go to the Object Manager.

3. Select the Object where you want to create the picklists (Contact or Lead).

4. Click Fields & Relationships.

Step 2: Create the Controlling Picklist

The controlling picklist determines which values are available in the dependent picklist.

1. Click New.

2. Select Picklist as the field type.

3. Enter a Field Label.

4. Choose the input type:

Enter values manually: Type the values directly (e.g., Car, Truck, Motorcycle).

Use a global picklist value set: Choose a predefined list.

5. Click Next, then Save.

Step 3: Create the Dependent Picklist

This picklist will be filtered based on the values of the controlling picklist.

1. Return to Fields & Relationships.

2. Click New and select Picklist.

3. Enter a Field Label (e.g., “Model”).

4. In the Values section:

• Select Enter values manually and input options (e.g., Sedan, SUV, Hatchback).

• OR choose an existing global picklist value set.

5. Check the box Restrict picklist to the values defined in the value set (recommended for data consistency).

6. Click Next, then Save.

Step 4: Define the Picklist Dependencies

Now, map how values from the controlling picklist affect the dependent picklist.

1. In Fields & Relationships, select the Dependent Picklist field.

2. Scroll down to the Field Dependencies section.

3. Click New.

4. Choose:

Controlling Field (e.g., “Vehicle”).

Dependent Field (e.g., “Model”).

5. Click Continue.

Step 5: Configure Dependency Mapping

1. A matrix will appear with controlling field values as columns and dependent field values as rows.

2. Double-click on a cell to toggle its visibility for the Controlling Field value shown in the column heading.

• Example:

• Car → Sedan, SUV, Hatchback

• Truck → Pickup, Box Truck

• Motorcycle → Sportbike, Cruiser

3. Click Save.

Additional Notes

• You can create multi-select dependent picklists, but the controlling picklist must be a standard picklist or a checkbox, not multi-select.

• Use Global Picklist Value Sets for consistent values across objects.
