Labels play an important part of any grocery system.

They carry useful details about the products such as ingredients, instructions for use and safety information.

There are laws that govern what products must be labelled and what must go on a label for each type of product, which we of course follow.

In a reuse system, because we want to use the bottles or containers for more than one product, we need to be able to easily apply and remove labels.

Traditional labels are made from plastic and/or paper and are typically glued on. Not only is removal costly and messy, it creates a huge amount of waste which we want to avoid.

Just like magic

To solve this, we have created a unique labelling system that applies label information directly to our containers, without using any paper, plastic or glue. We're able to easily remove them before we clean them, the material removed in this process is a minute amount of carbon black.

Our Magic Labels are a first for reuse and dramatically improve the efficiency of our system as well as not producing any waste.

This is how they look:

Here are some of the questions we often get about out Magic Labels:

How do you make your labels

We have built our own labelling software that lets us create, edit and manage 1,000s of labels easily.

We print the labels onto containers only when they are needed, meaning we don't hold stock of filled products and only fill them when they've been ordered. This keeps the number of total bottles and containers we need down, making us more efficient and the service more affordable.

Our printer is in our CleanFill hub.

Do your Magic Labels stay on?

Yes, they are durable and stay on during use, including taking shower and bath products in hot water with you.

They don't need any extra care in the home - treat them the same way you would one of your old products with glued on plastic labels.

How do you make sure your labels have the correct information in?

We make sure we're putting the correct information in our labels. Here is how we do this:

  • For all our products we work with suppliers to ensure the correct information is included

    • We carry the manufacturer and/or supplier label content, replicating it. If they carry a voluntary allergen warning then we will carry it too, for example if we buy our pasta from a supplier and the packaging has the warning "this pasta was produced in an environment that also handles eggs, peanuts, soybeans and milk" then we would carry that warning too along with our own

  • For our food products our labels are signed off by our expert Food Technician

  • When labelling allergens we highlight them in bold. We also carry a general warning on all our products (even home and personal care products) as at our CleanFill hub we do handle products that are or contain allergens.

  • Where required we also use the correct CLP hazard warning labels. Many eco friendly products are very concentrated so as to avoid shipping water around and so have this labelling requirement

Allergens

We use precautionary allergen labelling where relevant.

Allergens are highlighted in bold in our labels, you can read more about how we handle allergens in this help article.
