For an Existing Rubric

  1. Navigate to a rubric either from an existing assignment or from 'My Rubrics'

    1. If you are accessing the rubric from an existing assignment, click on 'Edit' and scroll down to view the rubric.

    2. If you are working on an existing rubric, click on 'Edit'.

  2. Once you have the rubric open, click '+Add Rubric Item'.

  3. Next, click on 'Create Rubric Item' in the upper right corner.

  4. Add a 'Writer Description'. This is what your students will see when they are writing so be sure to use student-friendly language.

  5. Next, add a 'Review Description'. this is what you will see when you are grading student work. You will notice that after you input a Writer Description, there will be an AI suggestion for the Reviewer Description. You can either accept it or reject it and write your own description.

  6. Next, you will need to add your proficiency levels. These are the scores that students can receive on the rubric item. The default is four levels. If you need more, click on “Add Proficiency Level” and if you need less, click on the “x” to remove a level.

Enter your proficiency level descriptions or click 'Suggest proficiency levels' to receive recommended descriptions. Click the checkmark to accept a suggestion, and make any revisions as needed.

  7. To the left, you will see the default proficiency level values, which in this case are 100, 67, 33, and 0. If you would like to set different values for each level, uncheck 'Use default proficiency levels'. Once you’ve unchecked the box, you can edit the values on the left.

❗️Note: The proficiency values will always be out of 100%. This will adapt to your scoring preferences in the assignment. For example: if you have a rubric item worth 4 points, then 100% will translate to 4 points.

If you need assistance with setting up your proficiency levels, contact the Writable support team using the Live Chat.

  8. Next, you have the ability to add optional starter text under 'Comment Stems' to guide student feedback.

  9. After adding any necessary comment stems, select the grade levels, genres, and skills for the rubric item.

AI suggestions for the skills will appear based on the writer's description. Click on a skill to add it to the rubric item. You can also click on the drop down menu to view additional skills to add. If you do not include a skill, AI feedback and scoring will not show.

  10. Once you’ve selected a skill, you’ll see the corresponding standards appear below. Standards will automatically adapt in reporting based on the grade level of the class it’s assigned to.

  11. Lastly, add a category for the rubric item.

  12. When you are done with the rubric item, click 'Done'.

💡Administrators can also check the box next to 'Share with Everyone in My District' to share the custom rubric item with teachers on their district license.
