Writable's rubrics are completely customizable. We recommend saving time by starting with an existing rubric item in Writable and editing it to suit your needs. You can edit rubric items from My Rubrics or while editing an assignment.

While you cannot replace an entire rubric or rubric item after an assignment has been opened by students, you can use these steps to edit the rubric item details such as wording, skills, and proficiency scores.

  1. From the 'My Assignments' page, click on an assignment.

  2. Then click 'Edit'.

  3. Scroll down to the assignment sections.

  4. For Short Responses:

    1. Click 'Edit Section'.

    2. Then click 'More'.

    3. Scroll down to the rubric item. Here, you can edit the point value.

    4. Next, click on the rubric item to edit the rubric item description and proficiency levels.

    5. Skip to Step 6 for directions on how to edit the rubric item description and proficiency levels.

  5. For Extended Responses:

    1. Edit the points value of the rubric item.

    2. Next, click on the rubric item to edit the rubric item description and proficiency levels.

    3. Skip to Step 6 for directions on how to edit the rubric item description and proficiency levels.

  6. Edit the rubric item to meet your grading needs.

    1. Display Other Language: Select 'Display Other Language' and choose Spanish to view the Writer Description, Reviewer Description, and Proficiency Levels Description translated from English.

    2. Writer Description: This is the description that students see while they are writing. Make sure to use student-friendly language.

    3. Reviewer Description: This is the description that you will see while you're grading.

    4. Proficiency Levels: These are the scores the student can receive on the rubric item.

      1. Adjust the proficiency levels and labels to match your scoring needs.
Click "Suggest Proficiency Levels" to generate proficiency levels tailored to help provide accurate, impactful AI-generated feedback. Click the checkmark next to a suggestion to accept it.

      2. Add a proficiency level by clicking 'Add Proficiency Level'. Remove a proficiency level by clicking on the blue 'x'.

      3. The default proficiency levels are set to automatically adjust the values of each level to be evenly distributed from 0 to 100%. If you would like to set different values for each level, uncheck “use default proficiency levels'. Once you’ve unchecked the box, you can edit the values on the left.

💡Note that the values will always be out of 100 percent. This will adapt to your scoring preferences in the assignment. For example, if you have a rubric item worth 12 points, then 100% will translate to 12 points, and 67% will translate to 8 points, and so on.

If you need assistance with this set up, you can contact the Writable support team using Live Chat.

    5. Comment Stems: Add or adjust comment stems. Stems help reviewers craft actionable feedback for writers. These are especially helpful for students reviewing their peers. You can edit these, leave them as is, delete them using the 'x' icons, or click "Add Stem" to add your own.

    6. Grades/Genre/Skills/Standards: Edit the grade level, genre, skills, and standards as needed. As a reminder, at least one skill is needed in order to get AI feedback.

    7. Category: The category will auto-populate based on the type of assignment you've been creating and assigning.

    8. Visibility: If you're an admin, you can check 'Share with Everyone in My District' to share the rubric item with others.

    9. My Rubric Items: Click 'Copy to My Rubric Items' button to save this customized rubric item for future use. If you do not see this option, the rubric item has already been saved for you.

  7. When you're done editing a rubric item, click the blue 'Done' button in the lower right corner to save your changes and return to the previous screen.

Tips!

  • You must include skills in a rubric item to view AI-generated draft scores and suggested comments on the rubric level. Click here for more information when setting up rubrics for AI feedback.

  • Standards will automatically be applied based on selected skill(s) and cannot be edited directly.

  • Standards will adapt to the grade level assigned for the class in reporting.
