Understand How to Grade and Give Feedback

Celebrate! Teachers have successfully created an account, prepped an assignment, and assigned it to a class at this stage of using Writable. At this time, students have submitted their writing and are ready for feedback. Teachers should be encouraged to use Writable to provide timely feedback since research shows that better feedback on student writing creates better revision, which drives growth.

Why Quality Rubrics and Feedback Matter

Assigning writing is relatively straightforward, but providing quality feedback aligned to rubrics can be time-consuming. Research tells us that students must constantly be writing, much more than anyone can grade, and when feedback is delayed, students become uninterested in their current writing assignment. In Writable, teachers can access the AI tools provided in each of the assignments to provide feedback and quick insights; however, teacher feedback is the most valuable. Encouraging your teachers to provide feedback for student writing will reap academic and lifetime rewards. Below are a few thoughts on the importance of rubrics and tips for feedback:

  • Rubrics provide clarity for students and teachers

  • Rubrics reinforce alignment to standards and skills

  • Rubrics allow teachers to provide targeted and meaningful feedback

  • Effective feedback is ongoing, consistent, and timely

  • Feedback should be goal-oriented

  • Feedback should be concise, focused, and student-friendly

Considerations for Your District or School

As a leader, have you ever felt that teachers struggle with the subjective nature of grading, even when using a rubric? As teachers begin to give feedback on student writing and engage in discussions with colleagues, questions may start to arise around ideas of common rubrics. Sharing common rubrics is recommended if your school or district would like all teachers to use the same rubrics across assignments. If you are interested in this process, click here to learn more.

Sample Communication

Below is a sample email that you can customize and share with teachers to motivate grading and giving feedback in Writable. Tip! Teachers can Collect Papers from students at any time to ensure all students submit their work and everyone gets the same amount of time on an assignment. Additionally, when used, this feature limits students’ access to assessments and assignments outside of scheduled writing time.
