How do I use the Essay Assignment wizard?

Use the Quick Essay creator to build an assignment using your own prompt or an AI Suggested Prompt (powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT).

Writable’s Essay Assignment Wizard makes setting up an assignment with a prompt, reading, and rubric easy.

Create your own Essay Assignment

1. Log into your Writable account.

2. Click on the ‘Create’ link at the top of the page, then select the 'Essay Assignment' tab inside the box.

3. Type your prompt in the box and then click 'Next'.

Need a prompt? 'AI Suggestions' to inspire your assignment!

4. Add reading passages by clicking 'Add Readings'. You can paste text or upload a PDF as a reading passage. Click 'Skip This Step' if you do not wish to add a reading.

5. Next you will choose a rubric. Click 'Choose Rubric' to open the Rubric Explorer.

6. Use the filters on the left side to narrow down your results by language (Spanish or English), grade band or level, genre, and scale. For more information on finding a rubric, click here.

7. Click on a rubric to expand and view its details. To use the rubric in your assignment click 'Use Rubric'.

Tip! You can copy a rubric and customize it to fit your needs by following these directions.

8. Enter your assignment title and then click 'Finish'.

9. Click ‘Assign’ to select classes and choose the assignment options.


Get an AI Prompt Suggestion

1. Log into your Writable account.

2. Click on the ‘Create’ link at the top of the page, then select the 'Quick Essay' tab inside the box.

3. Click 'AI Suggestions'.

4. Type a phrase or prompt idea to get AI suggestions, then click Enter on your keyboard to see suggested prompts. Click on a prompt to continue creating your Essay Assignment (see steps 4-9 above).
