If a deck is outside of your price range, or maybe not a great option for your area, you have a few other options for defining zones and creating usable space in your yard.

Pavers

If your property or budget can’t accommodate a deck, a paved patio is your next best option. These can get pricey, too, but there are plenty of ways to keep costs down. Paved patios aren’t raised above the ground level, but they offer a clear separation of one space from another and create a "floor" feeling that you would also get with a deck.

Gravel or Decomposed Granite

The most budget-friendly option is simple gravel or decomposed granite area. This option not only looks great, but it also offers a cost-effective way to define a separate outdoor area.

Gravel comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors, making it great for any project.

Decomposed Granite offers a rustic feel, and can look at home in both modern or traditional designs.
